So in 2016 I picked up a 96' deluxe for $700. Some kid had bought it let it sit and then paid a Harley shop to get the carbs running 😂 they got it torn down and had no idea what they were doing so outside it sat for 2 years.
I stripped it down and and got it started before going any further to make sure the motor was good. It was, a local guy I was in the Army with had opened a shop out of his house and said he'd love to work on it.
So I hit up Billy Carr of Billy's out back(Honda V4 Carb Guru) and got the works for a rebuild kit as well as 108/42+2 shims jet kit to go with the Aftermarket Exhaust I was searching for and K&N filter. Also changed all the fluids out with Top of the line Maxima, front EBC double H pads, HD Headlight Bucket and 5.75" LED Daymaker, 15/42 520 Chain conversion, and I picked up a Gunfighter lady (w/backrest) seat and Mustang Solo seat adapted from a shadow and Pirelli Night Dragon 130/80 and Night Dragon GT 170/80 rear tire and Cycleistic Brake stay and a Vintage Vetter Sting fairing from 84.
While he was working on it I found some Supertrapps a guy on Craigslist was throwing in with his Magna sell I immediately offered him Cash. He settled on $220 plus the ride$40. I then added LA chopper End caps that open or close for the Supertrapps and 8 diffuser disks.
I rode it around like that for a while but it was putting strain on my already jacked up lower back and neck so I started doing some research. Found that VT1100 bars had the pull back and rise I was looking for and played nicely with the stock controls. I also added 5"+ Barnett cables and a MP braided speedo cable(had snapped 2 factory ones) I found some beautiful chrome Cobra risers +1pullback+1Rise max maybe and Willie and Max Showstopper Top clamp from a Shadow and Avon Grips with a Throttle boss and CNC adjustable levers. Wow what a more comfortable riding postion not reaching for the bars. This bike already had the MC enterprises highway pegs but they were a little short for me. So I adapted a set of Hwy pegs from a Dyna to the MC Enterprises mount to work in consort with there pegs. 3 different riding postion for my feet Stock Pegs, MC Pegs, Dyna Pegs wider and farther away with heel rested on MC pegs
I found a guy selling a Regular Gunfighter for cheap so I picked one of those up for around town and it was in better shape than my GF lady but no backrest 😭.
I added Mapam mirrors and Mapam Sissy bar set to go with the GF so I can leave the factory sissy bar attached to the GF Lady.
I then added a Kisan Signal Minder SM3 to get auto cancel blinkers after my switch broke, it also adds 4ways, escort mode, rear running lights and brake flash modulation on depress if so desired with 3 wire hookup.
Last month I found the Holy Grail of 3rd gen performance parts(,other than the 4-2 Supertrapps) a Dyna 3000 ignition and I overpaid significantly. At first I wasn't impressed but after upping my octane rating and closing off my endcaps OMG..... This thing pulls sooooo hard all the way to redline (it does throw the RPMs off a bit) but it's hard to see why Big Honda decided to pull 5° timing above 9K RPM other than to make the VFR seam better.
I've put well over 20K miles on this Right since I picked it up, that's what's showing on the Odometer but I know it's much more because i didn't replace the Speedo cables right away.
The ND GT rear is showing its age but the front looks good still and it's time for new chain and sprockets. I need to rebuild the front shocks as the Superbrace I added makes everything feel more pronounced on bumps but it does hug the corners and road better with it. I also have a set of Progressive 440 sitting in the shop but didn't want to add them until the front gets a done up to match.
All in all The Magna is an extremely capable cruiser that blows the side covers off every other cruiser it's come across of more than twice it's displacement and handles almost like a sport bike.
I'm looking for a Rocket 3 Touring for more of the Long trips my Riding Group takes but the Magna will never be allowed to sit up. I want to get the Carbs tuned on a Dyno soon just to see what it will make and get optimal Fuel Burn but, my 1st priority has to be the front forks.
Adding soon Show Chrome Brake Perch switch block, LED fog Lamps, Mapam luggage rack
If you have any questions on part numbers or install stuff let me know I'll see what I can find in my invoices.
