Title: Honda VLX swingarm on Magna Gen 3
Post by: ironnike on February 07, 2019, 02:49:37 PM
Did anyone ever attempted to change the swingarm of Magna gen 3 for a VLX swingarm?
Is that possible and what involves?
Is there a swingarm from different bike that will be a direct bolt on for the Magna 750?
The reason I'm asking is because I like the classic look of the swingarm pictured over the original one. Another reason is the fact that will allow for a mono shock suspension on the rear.
Is it too mad to think at such mod?
Thanks in advance for your input.
I'm searching the web(including this forum and the v4m) for long time to find an answer.

I've never heard of anyone discussing or attempting what you are asking..
As far as the mono shock, wouldn't that have one end attached to the rigid frame, and the Magna would not have a point for that, So that would have to be welded in, IF the geometry was correct.
The VLX swing arm is set up for a spoke wheel, so I'm not sure what alignment differences there would be (Spacers, etc) to align the wheel with the front sprocket. Also not sure what the maximum tire width is on the rear of the VLX, so would that limit what size rear tire you could run?
I do know that much of the front end is shared between the 2 bikes. There are obvious differences (front fender) because again, the VLX has narrow (and I believe taller) wheel over the Magna front wheel..
Keep us update if you decide to attempt this.

Thanks everyone for your input and interest. I didn't give up the idea of a VLX swingarm on the Magna, I just didn't had the time to think at it for a while.
I was looking at this option(see picture attached) to facilitate the monoshock and VLX swing arm. I was looking online for information in regards to the dimensions of the mounting points of Magna & VLX swingarm but so far I couldn't find any. So if anyone knows what the dimensions are, please inform.

I do like your thinking and willingness to try and think outside the box.

Thanks. I hope I'll get the chance to materialize it.

I am impressed that you have the mechanical expertise to give this a try.  I am going to bring up a rather obtuse "issue" that may be no issue at all.
When one puts a lift under the 3rd gen and lifts the frame, the bike is rather unbalanced, being heavy on the back end -- especially if it has bags, sissy bar, mustang seat, etc. There is a post on the main page showing a wooden fixture to place between a Larin lift and the bike that fixes this problem with an extension that rests on the swing arm.  (I built a metal version welded from pipe and angle that accomplishes the same thing with the much cheaper lift from Harbor Freight.)  No matter which one a person uses, it appears the swing arm you suggest has no place for such a balancer to rest.  With the single shock shown, this is probably a "moot" point (pun intended), but just something to think about.

Thanks Lawarence. That's a valid point.

I've see one such example on a 3rd gen. On the V4MB page but no info on how to accompany it.
It was VFR single sided swing arm.

That is a great find, never seen that before.

I imagine it uses the same pivot bolt so the hardest part is probably fabbing up a wishbone to the frame.

I've seen that one too. Found also the guy that was saying he did most fabrication on the bike. Sent him a PM asking if any pictures are available from the build but no reply so far.

Where did you find him talking about it?
