Does anyone know what the purpose of this nut is??
I've taken it off thinking maybe it was for a Oil Pressure gauge or something, but it's not...

as my dad would say  "it's for a while"   On my 99 california model I have a a chrome hard line running to the back of the bike.   that nut holds a bracket that holds that line.

I used to to mount my Air Horns... It must have a purpose though.. You can't believe that an engineer said, "Man, it would look good if we added a big nut right here!"

The nut is used for the extra air hoses/pipes found on the California emissions models of our bikes.  The California emissions models add about 15 extra 3mm to 5mm hoses and pipes to the bike, along with two air suction valves, one at the front of the engine and the other at the back, which add four larger hoses along the sides and rear of the engine area.  You can see the pipe that is connected to that nut in this diagram.  It is part #14.  I have also included a picture of my bike (California model) that shows the pipe and the other hoses you can see near the radiator hose (right next to the frame).

Thanx Chokse, That's what I needed to know.. So me using as a mount is what it was made for, so negative impact (Although it's been that way for 25K miles already)...

The "blowers" (hyperchargers) are made by Kuryakyn and I have two of them- one on each side of the bike.  They are non-functional and are for decorative purposes only.  That being said, they do have functioning butterfly valves and I have spliced into my vacuum system, so they open and close with the throttle.  While they don't add any horsepower, and probably even cause some extra drag, I do like them for the "Wow" factor they create.  I can't remember where I got them or what they cost.  I had wanted the DePretto Moto carb covers, but they were discontinued so I had to go with these.  However, I think these (non-functioning version) Kuryakyn hyperchargers have been discontinued as well.  You can still get real Kuryakyn hyperchargers, but they will cost quite a bit more than the decorative, non-functioning version that I have.

that was a very insightful comment,  I would be wary of answering that question for fear that in may bring on a wrath of other insightful comments.
