Front Fork Oil - 3rd Generation Magna(Read 13392 times)
Front Fork Oil - 3rd Generation Magna on: August 20, 2010, 01:04:12 PM
How often, in mileage or years, should the front fork oil be changed on my 1999 VF750C?
How much time should the job take at a Honda dealer?
10wt or 15wt fork oil?
Thanks in advance.
Lee

There is no definite replacement interval per the service manual, which calls only for inspection every 8000 miles. If the suspension isn't exhibiting damping problems, I wouldn't screw with it.

Oh, the manual specified oil is helpfully specified as "Fork Fluid". No weight or viscosity given.

From what I understand 10wt is standard for the Magna, I went back with 15wt myself.

Thanks, guys.
I'm not having any damping problems nor fork seal leaks. So, I guess I'll wait, until I do, and then switch to progressive springs and 15 wt fork "fluid".

Unless its leaking don't worry about it, if in the future you want to go to progressive springs then is a good time to change it however on my 2000 when I put progressive springs in the fluid looked clean just like new fluid so I left it alone.

Jerry,
That is really interesting.
I never realized fork oil lasted so long.

Your call on replacing the fork oil, but be aware that the fork oil weights are not standardized.  I.e., 10wt fork oil may not be the same viscosity between vendors.  Years ago I searched and found some viscosity indices for different fork oil vendors.  If you do change, might want to look around for something similar and current.

Lurkin,
Thanks.  :-)
I wasn't aware of that.
The more I've ridden my "new" bike, since replacement of the brake fluid, the happier I am with the overall ride.
I'm not going to mess with the springs or fork oil, unless I really need to do so.

Here's a bunch of info on fork oil specs that might be useful:

LIMagna,
I never thought fork oil would be so complicated. Of course, that's why no one ever suggested I should be an engineer.  :D

I guess it's just as complicated as engine oil.  I'm just glad it's usually not the subject of a religious crusade  ... at least not on these boards :)

I know what you mean about those engine oil debates.
