Good idea, Curtis.

My plugs are fairly new so unless I fouled them I should be OK. I just got 43 mpg off my last tank. However Colin, it may not be a bad idea for you. You can get the plugs cheaper from O'Reilly than the dealer (or any place that can order NGK plugs).

Here's the part / plug numbers:
5666 or CR8EH-9  standard stock plug
3797 or CR8EHIX-9  for the irridium plug.

I usually end up giving them the NGK part number. I find they can look this up easier than the plug number. The iridiums are only about 50 cents more than the standard plugs. Be careful putting them in. They can break easily.

Has anyone tried the Split fire or V fire plugs?

Thanks!  I'll try to put these in before the weekend and see what happens.  Y'all rock!

Luke, I haven't heard of anyone trying these. Particularly since I don't think there's an exact match for the Magna plugs. The iridiums are supposed to be as good as you can get, though.

You're welcome. Order them soon because they will more than likely take a day to get them at the store. If you can't put them in before the trip then just bring them to the wrenching session.

A very interesting discussion indeed!

My method when starting from cold: pull out choke and turn idle knob (located near choke and on same side, but hidden!) about 1 1/2 to 2 full turns to increase idle speed ( I forget which way -cw or ccw). Turn key on & hit start button. It starts right away: let it fast idle for 15 - 20 seconds, then kill the choke. I let it warm up for 3 - 4 minutes, then adjust the idle back down to about 1000 RPM. Fast idle at about 2 - 2500 RPM.
This little "trick" works for me all the time.

I change the plugs a bit earlier than recommended, and always drain my carbs before winter storage. Last year, I've started adding a small amount of FI cleaner (2-3 caps full) every 2nd or 3rd tank full of gas. A little bit over a long time is, in MHO, better than a couple of big shots over a short time; I only burn premium fuel and like to drive in the higher RPM range (usually over 5K ) unless in town, then I slow down a bit!

Safe riding to everyone this summer!

Cheers!

I ordered the irridium plugs today - will be in tomorrow morning.  $6.99ea. from O'Reilly (ouch, but wth.. dying to try these things out.)

If I don't put them in right away, will bring to the wrench session on Saturday.  Look forward to meeting everybody!

Yeah. The $6.99 is an ouch but the standard plugs are only about 50 cents less the last time I price checked. :)  Ouch either way.

Does 0.44" sound right?  I probably won't have time to put them in before the wrench session, but I can darn sure pre-gap 'em here at the office

Well, I've heard of some people gapping iridiums but the first set I bought came with specific instructions saying not to gap them. It said the points were too delicate and a gap gauge will likely break off the tips.

So I haven't gapped mine. :)

Eek!    Mine don't say anything about not gapping them (and I've already done 2).  I was very careful to not push off against the iridium tip though and just gently put the gauge up against them when measuring.

Hopefully others will comment :?

If you're not pushing on the tip then you should probably be OK. I don't know many others in MOOT that are using iridiums.

Now as far as the gap, I couldn't tell you off-hand.

I have the iridiums in my Yellow bike and the regular plugs in the other when I bought plugs from Cyclegear they were almost 10 each
so 7 bucks sounds good!!!!

So Allen can you tell ANY difference in the plugs???  Maybe swap em after riding a bit and keep a log..
Personally I think for stock ignitions, stock plugs are more than fine, any fancy plug is just fancy..
