Busted up the Wing this morning.

Well I had my first real get off on the MagnaWing this morning.  It is 30 deg here in Houston and where I park it at work there is run off from 2 monster air conditioners that runs across the middle of the parking space.  I pulled in and didn't even think about the fact that it might have a skim of ice on it.  It didn't even look frozen.  I was going mabey 5 mph when the back wheel just slid out from under me.  She went down hard on the right side.  She landed on the fairing and saddle bag.  Looks like the fairing took the brunt of the impact.  Now I have a busted Vetter.  From the outside you can see the front right corner is busted at the bottom right at the front of the area where it bolts to the mount.  But from the inside there is a crack running all the way from the bottom to the top right in the middle of the curve where  the sides come back.  The only other dammage is the stick on spot mirror on the right side poped off.

I guess it is a good thing that Jeff In Katy brought me a Vetter fairing shell a couple of weeks ago.  Looks like that will be my weekend project.  Swaping out all the lights and other stuff to that new shell and putting it on the bike.

Really sorry to hear about your spill and I'm glad you're OK. Knowing you're OK may feel like small consolation when you're looking at the damage right after something like that happens. But it'll become more important over time.

These things can happen so fast. When I slipped in gravel on my bike I was coming to a slow stop and probably at 1 mph. It did about $180 worth of damage. But now I'm just glad I am OK. A 500 lb. body slam from a bike free-falling can hurt you pretty bad.

I think I would complain to the building management. They should re-route the air conditioner drains to prevent that from happening in the future. Icing up a parking lot/space is negligent, even if we only have a few freezing days here each year. Maybe you can save someone else in the future.

Yep, at the very least they should fix an unsafe condition for the next person.

It was 14 degrees this morning and I was thinking about one spot on my ride in to work that usually has drainage problems.  Turned out it was dry for once, except for the outside lane and I'm never in that lane anyhow.

Glad you're ok.  Good luck on repairing the MagnaWing.  Remember this is an opportunity to make her better than new!  Install a digital thermometer in the new fairing, that's the ticket!! LOL

No need for a reason other than the journey.

Yep...I got her back together again.

I went out Friday night and started striping out the fairing shell I got from Jeff.  Got to pulling the headlight shell and ran into problems.  After an hr or so getting to the point of throwing it across the garage I decieded to just call it a night.  I went down to Union Cycle Salvage here in Houston Saturday morning and picked up another Windjammer SS.  I bought the best looking one he had.  Still doesn't look as good as the one I had.  Got home and relized that mine wasn't the SS but the Windjammer V.  Not that big of a deal.  This new one also has a stereo package.  It has the aftermarket copy of the Vetter Cycle Sound.  The stereo pkg is a bit biger on this one.  Haven't had a chance to play with the tape deck that was in there yet.  I just pulled it off for now.  I will have either that one or the old one on there for the Wild Hog ride.

So yesterday I spent a few hrs striping the turn sig lights and other things from my old fairing and moving them to the new one and bolting her on the bike.  Turns out I did a bit more damage than I thought.  When I pulled the mounting bolts out and lifted the busted one off the frame I found that the front right corner where it bolts to the mount was completely busted as it stayed stuck to the mount.

But the bottom line is she is back on the road again.  I just have to work on some cosmetics on the new fairing to get her back to looking good.
