My wife and I are new owners of a beautiful Black 97 Magna. Have pulled and cleaned carbs (wasn't running when purchased)   Runs beautiful with the exception of idle quality and no tool in my box will adjust idle mixture screws.

If you have a idle mixture socket  new or used we would like to buy or rent it. Or perhaps point to a place on the web where we can purchase one.

Thanks
David and Jennifer

Mac tools sells a bit that fits the "D" shaped jet and a 1/4" drive socket...  1/4" D–shape Hex Driver MN08-0242
This is one of the best carb adjustments one can make on a 3rd gen Magna...

Yep you need, $2.90 Part # 08-0242  BIT, D-SHAPE F/USE WITH 08-0229

Oh forgot to ask when you pulled the carbs did you pull and clean the slow speed jets???  These are the main culprit for poor idle and low end performance..

Sorry. I was trying to link directly to the D-shaped bit. That's what you'll need in combination with the skewdriver or the Mac tool Greg mentioned. Incidentally, the Mac tool is listed for $1.99 on Mac's web site and Motion Pro has it listed for $90. Of course, they're including all the bits. YEAH RIGHT. They're not worth that much.

I think I'm going to pick up the Mac tool just for options. The skewdriver isn't perfect for all applications but it does come in quite handy.

When I removed the carbs, and removed the bowls, they were completely clean. I didn't remove any jets, only sprayed through them with carb cleaner.   In reading your past posts Greg, I saw where the slowspeed jets were culprits. (wish i had found this forums before reassmbling the bike)

I purchased some seafoam and will put in tank and ride.  This 10yr old bike only has 9k miles on it, so very possible eventhough bowls were clean, that they may have had garbage inside passages.

I will adjust idle mixture and ride out bottle of seafoam. (16 gallons) if perfect then will remove carbs again and remove slowspeed jets) Is there a link to show a picture of which ones are slow speeds?

Thanks so much for your quick help

The blue handle 90° tools looks super, however there is so much slop in the gears that it is not smooth at all and almost worthless..  I almost never use mine it is so bad..
I plan to try and work the gears some and get them meshing closer to be smooth and then I think it will be nice...   Sure hate to buy an expensive tool and have to use other tools on it to make it work as advertised LoL.

Remember Jesse, that the sync'ing screwdriver (which I own as well) works pretty good, but the multi-bit tool does not hehehehe.
However Jeff has built one for MOOT that I just need to pick up from him, that is if I dont forget to actually take it with me next time LoL.  Thanks JEFF!!!

Quick shipping, I've been notified that the socket is on the way. Hopefully will be in by the weekend.

I went ahead and pulled the carbs and cleaned the jets and passages.  Still going to run the seafoam and adjust idle mixture, but you were right on Greg about the problem in slow speed jets.

Sat night will ride it to the track and get some numbers with and without nitrous. If it leaves the line well, and she can cut decent lights, my wife is going to bracket race it.  She won't spray it full passes, nitrous is just insurance if bobbles leaving line, miss shift ect... I installed 15hp per cylinder nitrous (60 hp boost on nos)

Any ideas on what a 3rd gen magna runs 1/8 or 1/4? Any suggested tire pressure and launch rpms would be great

Thanks again for all your help

Motorcyclecruiser.com has a few reviews on Magnas. I believe they post  1/4 mile times from 12.5 to 12.7 on a stock bike. They also claim it to be quicker than the Valk and the VTX 1800 in the 1/4 (but not by much).

You'll have to launch at pretty high rpms to prevent bogging down. I know a lot of guys who drag race the Magna will go down 1 tooth on the front sprocket (15) or up a couple on the back (42). The preference is on the back so the chain is in less of a bind.

If you're running nitrous you might want to consider getting the Dyna 3000 ignition. It has several different ignition curves for different configurations including nitrous and also an input for a retard mode.

Keep us posted.

Jeff,

Are you going to build a few of them and offer them to the different regions or sell on Ebay?

I know my Carbs can use an adjustment.

David, the one Jeff made was donated to MOOT!  I am sure it would take time to build one, as it is first rate designed!!!  Jeff did an awesome, super job in created it..

Thanks for the kind words Greg, I greatly appreciate it.

I had thought about making a few but never thought much about selling them. For now there is the one I have and there is the one for MOOT. The one for MOOT is for MOOT and it's members and I figure y'all have the say in how and what to do with it. Maybe set up a poll if there are several ideas on what to do with it. It belongs to all of us so all of us should decide on what is best for all the members.
