Hello,

I am the guy that had the questions about the supension on the 1982 Magna V45. That is all straighten out now thanks to the forum.

My question now is about anti freeze. I need to add some to the bike and want to know if I can mix and match. I don't know what kind was used last  time. I have some 50-50 premix (ethylene glycol/deionized water)I use on the tractor. Fleetguard is the brand I think, an extended life type.

Thanks.

I'm running some ot that premixed stuff in my 98 right now.  You just want to make sure it is made for use in an aluminum engine.  There are parts in the cooling system that have an adverse reaction to anti-freezes that are made for automotive use.

Magna 4 Me,

Thanks for the info. I just read the lable over looking for whether it was for aluminum engine. The closest thing to it was this, "For all Deisel, gasoline and natural gas engines."  Also says somewhere that is mixes with all anti freeze. Sorry to ask, but what do you think of that? Am I too cautious?

I plan on doing some maintainance soon as I get a manual. Think I'll do the anti freeze then but for the time being I want to be able to ride it without having to worry about it over heating on my first longish trip on it.

Thanks Tom.

yeah motorcycle engines seem picky the magnesium and aluminum react to certain antifreeze they have specific antifreeze but if is good for aluminum it should be good for the bike. Heck I am going to Royal Purple thru out the whole bike  8)

Roboto65,

Thanks, I have read the lable over and over. It really doesn't say one way or the other, but found an 800 number for assistance so will give them a call. I am just real poor at this point and don't want to spend any more money at the moment and want to get out and about a bit more.

Where I live is pretty flat but not too far north of here are some beautiful hills with fairly new roads. Want the bike in good order.

Saw a post about the royal purple and will read that right now. Thanks

Just got off the phone with a tech rep from the anti freeze company (Fleetguard) and they assured me that it is fine for that. She explained that they test there stuff buy putting in pieces of all kinds of metal that it may come in contact with. After they remove the pieces they use they dry them off and re weigh them to see if they have gained or lost any weight from reaction(s) with their product. I asked specifally about aluminum and magnesium and again was assured.

Think I will top off with that and later on when I get a manual I will replace all of it.

Also make sure it doesn't contain silicates or it will eat your water pump seals.

Thanks Curtis,

I will call them again. The lable says, "meets or exceeds all heavy duty and light duty low silicate specifications," and then it has TMC  PRP-329 and a few others. I am going to see if I can find some place on line to look up those numbers up and what  they mean.

I just got back from a ride and was going to go down and top it off after dinner, glad I got on line first. I really don't want to screw things up.

This is something else the kid I got it from didn't tell me though I asked, is how to check the oil in this machine. He showed me a window along the bottom right hand side and said that was it. Later on, somewhere on line, I read about a screen that needs to be cleaned periodically. Truely, it was a newer model than the '82, but thought it might be that or it may serve as both.  It does have what could be used as a full mark and a low mark, just little, horizontal lines and each side of glass.I just can't find a dipstick on the thing. I hate being so ignorant but friendly, helpful folks like you are a real help.

Thanks again Curtis
