Try this link.  I used it to install mine, but be warned some of the instructions are not accurate, but it gives you some guidance.

My son bought a set for the 96 Magna, installed with no problems after laying everything out and thnking about it a bit.
Works great last time I asked him about em, he is happy with them.

update on the forward controls::::

on the brake side rod, where it hooks up to the bike (not the control peg) but to the bike was that little metal piece, i had to take it off and turn it forward a lil bit and it hooked up fine... still a lil short but will do fine... on the shifter side rod, where it hooks to the control peg, it comes really close to the exhaust pipe because of the spacer you need, it did hit the pipe where you couldnt even shift the gears, so we relocated the spacer and works ok (i guess)... now where it hooks into the bike, it pokes out too much and rubs the inside of the cover where we could hardly fit the cover back on... and lastly, the footpegs he sent were the wrong ones!!! if you look at the picture it shows that the pegs on both sides hook onto the controls into a female fitting but the fitting it goes into is male.... AHHHH so we, and sorry, by we i mean me and my dad lol, we took pictures right away of the problems with the pegs and sent the guy an email with the pics and he responded saying that we just need to send him the pegs and he would send the right ones..... wow what a night!! im tired and my bike is all broke down... OH and the brake and shifter pegs (the smaller ones) didnt have the hardware to hook up to either... and i have work in the morning, im going to bed....

Thought I'd repost this from the MRF forum, plus I remember CrazyJoe posting (in a thread I cannot find) about the werid male/male or female/female fitting issues and having a source for the rod mod fix with this in mind.  He'd be more than glad to respond to anyones questions about this if you drop him a line.  He took the time to draw up everything, find someone to make these, and doesn't make a dime off them.  Again, Greg and other mods, if appropriate plz edit or delete this thread as I am not trying to direct traffic elsewhere.

I figured it is time that I explain this again.

The Rodmod is a Stainless Steel polished rod 3/8" in diameter and aprox. 12" long.  It is to be used in conjunction with the Mapam forward controls and replaces the short extension they send out and the existing shift rod.

This two piece rod is weak at the koint and myself and others have had it break.  This prompted me to have the special rod made by a machine shop.

This is a super price on a piece that will last as long as you or anyone else has the bike.

I have to order them in quantity to get this price and we need a few more folks at this time.

So please, send me the money as soon as possible.

Thanks -- Joe.

When I installed I also into some issues.  I bought mine from a vendor that sent them from Spain,,, interesting, but the delivery worked well.  After they arrived, I set a morning aside to do the install, removed the existing controls and pegs to make room for the forwards, then found out they sent the wrong kit.  I had to re-assemble to stock, then return the wrong kit and wait for the new one to arrive.

After the correct kit arrived, I ran into some of the same issues as you, not the peg problem though.  On the brake rod side, it took some messing with the Hinde (sp) joint adjustments to get it set right such that it would hook up and not hit the exhaust pipe.  Other then that, that side went fine.

On the shift side I, and several others that I read about, ran into the spacer/cover problem.  For the connection from the shift rod to the forwards I ended up putting the screw head toward the exhaust pipe (opposite from the instructions) and used about 5 washers between the screw and the forward's shift arm as a spacer instead of the supplied spacer.  The supplied spacer was too large, and I couldn't seem to cut the spacer straight enough with a hacksaw :-)

You do need a spacer in order to clear the cover though.  If you use washers, you can add/subtract washers to get the required clearance.
