chain and sprockets

I need help.  I have a 1999 vf750c Magna.  I got new sprockets and chain and when my husband was trying to install them he dropped the side cover that covers the front sprocket.  The parts that are connected to the clutch cable came out.  He has the chain and sprockets installed and thinks he found all the parts connected to the cable but when he tried to put them all back together, the cable does not work.  It is either not connected and the controll moves freely or will not not move at all.
I have been reading your posts and you seem to be helpful.  I would very much appreciate any insight on this.
Thanks,
Jill

I trying to remember by memory JIll but I know there is a pin that has to be installed that is inside the cover or it won't engage plus I know the cover has to be tightened all the way for it to engage.  I know that's not much help but fear not, someone will pop in to give you more help.

I had the same thing happen to me a few months ago.  Kaploot!  Clutch linkage parts everywhere.  It took a little time and a lot of patience, but the parts do fit back together.  I suffered the same problem of the loose cable/linkage after the first three or four attempts.  If I remember correctly, it required paying close attention to two items.  One was the placement of the spring and its relation to that pin that fits in the cover and connects to the cable.  I don't remember how I did it, but I tried it in several different positions (Both the spring and the head that clips on to the end of the cable).  The other was that the cover really needed to be "snapped" into place.  There were times I thought the cover was secure, but it wasn't.  You can actually feel it snap or pop when it is fully seated and ready to be bolted.  Don't be afraid to really push on that cover, but be sure the little male/female peg near the shift linkage (on the inside of the cover) is lined up.  Hope this helps.

Jill, I remember the first time I did that job the same thing happened to me. It is a chore getting it back on correctly but it is possible. I cannot remember the steps but if you still have problems after the advice given here, you guys can give me a call and I will go out and take mine off and walk through reassembling it with you on the phone, I am that confident that it will work. I have had it off three times now, and it always pops back in when you have all the stars, I mean pieces in the right place.
It does not take much for the clutch to work when it is in correctly, very little movement.

When you put the shaft back in the cover you need to put enough load on the spring to make the cable link stick straight out from the engine. make sure the shaft inside mates up with the socket in the cover and it should slip back in place with out any effort. I just had mine off yesterday checking the front sprocket and adj my chain. I actually pulled it off twice once to check the sprocket and then again a couple hours later to adj the shift linkage when I put my floorboards on.

I got home from work today after two days of riding my old shadow to find my magna all back together!  My husband was able to use the advise posted.  Thanks so much to all of you, especially Bob for his kind offer.  I am so glad to have the magna back.  You guys rock!
