Installing new gas tank?

I bought a new tank for the V65.  Can someone tell me how to drain the gas out of the old tank so that I don't make a mess?  Is this a tough job?  I want to keep the old one for future use also.  How should I go about storing it so that it doesn't rust inside?  Thanks for any help you can offer.

I don't have a direct answer about storing the old tank, but here is what I know about condensation and gas tanks:  1.) A full tank will not develop condensation where an empty tank will.  I don't know what you would fill it with, fuel would eventually go bad and may be a hazard depending on where the tank is stored.  2.) An empty tank stored in an area that is climate controlled will be less likely to develop condensation.  The greater and more frequent the temperature changes, the more condensation will develop in the tank.

Hope this helps.

Brad, simple drain the tank the best you can, go to home depot and buy a gallon of denatured alcohol, pour into the tank slosh it around vigorously.  Let sit for a while, slosh some more, then drain and leave cap off.  The alcohol will evaporate and you should have a clean dry tank for storage.
A added measure would be to find some of the tank kreme, the white coating stuff and kreme the tank when finished.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
Just to let you know, I drain & remove my gas tank from the bike every fall when I put the bike away for winter. I have a 2000 VF 750 CD; both the bike & tank are stored in a heated shop. After I've drained the fuel, removed the tank, gotten the last little bit of gas out by soaking it up with rags shoved in thru the filler hole, I plug the filler hole with a clean rag, and hang the tank up by the mounting hole. The rag lets the air in/out equalize. My tank has NO RUST, and gets no condensation because the temperature is constant (and air is very dry in winter).

Water in a tank will always sit in the lowest spot, since gas floats on water. If the tank is full, you may have water at the rear most (lowest part) and eventually, she will rust & leak at that point. Emptying once a year will get rid of this water.
