My bike seems to want to heat up at red lights I changed the antifreeze not long ago also I have never heard the fan turn on any thoughts on the subject. The guage hasn't got to the red yet but it gets close.

Check the radiator cap.  Mine went bad and cost me a head gasket.  I carry coolant and oil in my saddlebags now and check them both several times a week now.

Quit stopping at red lights, they cause your bike to run hot!

I would check the fan stat and the cap, these are the usual suspects.

Use a jumper across the fan relay to make sure that the fan works.  This is a quick check to make sure that it can turn on.

Checking you cap is another easy check.  You could also take out your thermostat and boil it to make sure it opens.

Good luck.

Where is the fan relay at? I put a different radiator cap on it didn't seem to make much difference it runs cool at highway speeds thinking that the fan may be the problem.

The easiest way is to pull the wire connector on the fanstat and put a jumper from one wire to the other.  Then turn your ignition switch on and the fan should run.  IF the fan does not run imy manual says to check for good battery voltage, blown or bad fuse, loose terminals or connectors, or an open circuit.

Hope that helps.

I pulled the radiator and the fan put a 12 volt jump to the fan and it works great, replaced the fan stat with one off of my old bike it was working when I crashed it checked the fuse no problem there but the fan still doesn't come on when the temp guage is nearing the red what should I check next, how do I check the wiring to see if maybe that is the problem.

Jerry they may have different temp points...  Meaning the vintage unit may start at say (this is just throwing out #'s I have not looked them up yet) at 175 degree, and the 3rd gen unit may kick in at 195 degrees.
