New CLutch , Still slipping.....

Recently put in new Barnett Clutch and Springs.  I get good hard grab when I first start out.  After I'm on the highway for about 20-25 miles it starts to slip in 5th and 6th and gets progressively worst, sometimes to the point were I'm barely getting the bike rolling out of first by the time I get off the highway.

Here's how I get home.  I pull over, shut it down, and open and shut the bleeder valve for the clutch lever really quickly.  It squirts a small amount of fluid.  I fire the bike up and it's fine for another 20-30 miles.

I'm at a loss.  Any thoughts??

Sounds like the slave cylinder is in need of a rebuild.

Thanks Greg.  I was hoping it would be something simpler.  Just my luck.  Well this old bike will have a lot of new parts by the time I'm done.

It will be ready for another 20+ years of fun!
I have seen this same situation happen on the front brake master cylinder on a V65, causing the brakes to progressively grab and not release.  There is a very tiny hole in the bottom of the resevour that is virtually a pressure relief for the back side of the piston thus allowing it to return easy.
Good luck, let us know if we can help...

The return port in the master cylinder is more than likely clogged with some trash/rust.  Flush out the system, refill and bleed and it should be ok.  The reason it acts up after warm up is that with the clog, there is no where for the fluid to go during normal heat expansion except torwards the clutch rod, which will slowly disengage the clutch plates.

I figured I'd give the flush and bleed a try first.  Fluid is cheap and that makes sense.  The screws securing the lid on the Clutch Master Cylinder are so rusted and soft they just went to mush when I tried to turn them.  Now I have to work on gettting them open to see what lies beneath.

One things for sure, when I open the bleed valve the fluid is very dark and thick coming out.  That can't be good!

Brendon,

I hadn't heard from you and wondering what happened to you. Good you still have the bike and working to remedy the clutch release issue.

What did you find out about your leaking fork seal? Does it look like pitting is an issue? If so you can find a used slider to replace your current one.

Hey Terry,

It didn't seem like it was pitted too bad to tear it up so quickly.  But I may look for another slider anyway just to be safe.  The left side is fine but the right is leaking away.  I removed the Dust cap and c clip to see if it was seated good and it looks fine.  So I'm ordering another set of seals and maybe look into a new slider.  I have been enjoying the bike as much as I can though and decided not to sell it.  Cheaper to keepher I think is the term.  I'm learning a hell of a lot though so that's worth something.

When she's all straightened out, I'll accompany you on one of those Saturday morning rides.  I'm also looking for a stock set of pipes.  Just don't like the sound from the cut baffles.

Well, bled the clutch until nothing but fresh new fluid was coming out.  The old fluid was almost black so it was easy to see when it started to clear up.  I have to say it seems to have made a huge improvement.  I almost checked this problem off my list until I was able to get a few slips going home after the bike had been in traffic for a long time and was good and hot.  I didn't have to pull over and open the bleeder again or anything I just kept riding and got a little easier on the throttle and it was fine all the way home.

So I guess I'm going to go ahead and rebuild the slave cylinder.  The parts are cheap and it doesn't really look like that big of a job after checking the manual.  I need to get something checked off the list this weekend!  :D

Bleed it up at the lever!!!! My v65 did the same thing and I had some air up there, that did not come out.  Bleed it at the bolt holding the line onto the reservoir.  Worked for me.

Sure did. And just like I thought, I'm regretting it.  Should have just kept it.  Everytime I come across another magna I like I've got some sort of issue going at the house that's tieing up cash.    Hopeing to find a cold weather deal soon.
