Mileage Going Down??

I've noticed that my mileage had been going down on my 97.  I used to hit reserve around 115 and even 120.  Lately I hit it at 105 and then last night at 98.  What could be some possibilities?  I haven't changed anything on the carbs and my riding style hasn't changed (fast and hard!   I mean come on, it's a Magna).  I ride it pretty often, several times a week, if not every day, and I replaced the plugs not too long ago, about a year ago.  My plans are to check the plugs and run a few tanks of seafoam through.

Any other suggestions ?

The last few days the head wind around here has been eating up my gas milage, I guess that's what it is. I checked my milage just yesterday I'm got about 43 mpg, thats down 3 to 7 mpg depending on how I ride.

Another possibility is the reformulated gas with 10% alcohol in it.  Everytime they change the formulation of what we are feeding our steeds the milage suffers.  I have seen the same reduction from my '98.

Granted we have had some pretty windy days and I have this problem with my right wrist, it gets these quirky twitches that seem to open the throttle all the way, so my fuel econemy never is what it could be.

The good news is that with cooler temps coming the air will be denser and dryer and that makes for better combustion.

You have gotten use to the Magna and ride it differently and never realized the slow progression. lol

Ninty eight is on par with the ones who ride it spirited!

Hummmm....you know, now that I think about it, my rear tire didn't seem to last as long at the last one...

I put a Metzler 170/80 on the rear last week.  I noticed a 300rpm drop at every speed-regardless of which gear I was in.  I rode to Rowlett Fri. eve riding on I35 into a 15-20 mph headwind.  Usually I have to switch to res. about 90-95 mis. , but with the larger tire I didn't go on res. until 102 mis. (this is good) Coming back home Sun. night late, the cold front had passed through OK.  I refueled at Ardmore, with a North wind 20-25, gusts to 35.  with the temp. about 53. I decided the fastest way to get home was to stay above 80 mph the last 80 mis.  I went on res. at 74 mis. avg 27 mpg that tank. Ugh! BTW- an aquaintance of mine has a '94 VFR750 and he only gets in the low 30's.

I agree, that as they put more and more corn-liquor in the gas we'll see all kinds of issues with our steeds!  They were made to run on good old fashioned petrol NOT corn-liquor

Brad,

Thats about what I would get on my stock tank when I was hitting around 85-90mph trying to get home. It cuts your mileage but you get home faaasssttttt!
