Has any one out there done the "banjo bolt oil mod?&

I've got an 82 Magna V45 and came across different oil mods for the bike. One that seemed like I could do was drilling out the banjo bolt to allow more oil flow. Has any one done this or know anyone that has? Would it be worthwhile for me to do to my bike.

I guess I am doubling up on questions too. I can't find just plain ethylene glycol anti freeze. I spent some time reading lables and the ones I read seemed to have some other thing in it too. SOmething like polythene or something. Should have written it down. FOund stuff that says it is safe for aluminum engines, I think it was PEAK, but I could find what was in it. Please just tell me what kind of anti freeze you use and make me a happy Mag rider.

Let's go for three questions. I think you can see where some paint is chipped on the tank of my bike. The primer is showing. I'd like to take care of that, any ideas that won't cost me an arm and a leg?  Click on PIC to enlarge.

Thanks

I will answer what I can, the anti-freeze, just make sure it says for aluminum and is silicate and phosphate free.
On the tank you can have it painted unfortunately those pricese range wildly as well as the outcome.  If you watch Ebay they show up quite frequently.  Or you can bite the bullet and buy a NOS tank from www.ronayersmotorsports.com or www.partsfish.com a littley pricey but it will be NEW and purty.
Cant help ya on the banjo drilling for oil, but have read the article briefly and seems like sound information.

Thanks Greg,

I just want to do the right thing by the old girl. I am not sure when what the last owner(s) used in the bike but not trusting that they either knew nor cared what kind of fluids to use. Didn't come with a manual.

I look into that banjo bolt thing a little more. I have seen so many posts about oil mods I figured I might need one too. I can't say that I am exactly mechanical but I am not a total clutz. I do the basic maintenance on the farm equipment and I do mean basic.

Anyway, thanks again.

If you have a good local auto paint supply they can computer match your paint from the side cover if its still good color. They can also mix the paint and put it in a aerosol can ,usually for under 20.00 . The chip I see on the side of your tank looks to large to paint with a paint brush. A spray touch up want be to bad, couple hours .

Charles,

What an interesting piece of information. I have never heard of such a thing and sounds just like what I need. Not too much cost and picked up locally. My first thought on the color was nail polish.  Thought there might be something close out there but this is sooooo much more intelligent than nail polish. Have some other spots to touch up on the frame with black paint and am sure I can match that.

Thanks

Problem with doing the paint match thing is these colors were a base coat and another color coat.
You can paint 2 items with the same system and get 2 different colors.  Check with www.colorrite.com they list colors by make, model, and year, a good place for the correct paint codes.

Thanks Greg,

Answer me this, why is nothing simple? Don't expect you to know, but thought that I would ask.

Thanks again.

It probably wont be perfect but it'll be closer than nail polish and cheaper than a new tank or professional paint job. They only put acrylic paint in the spray cans , as far as I know.  The paint job on my 82 V-45 came from a spray can. It's all I could afford right now. You can always do a base coat/clear coat later. Greg is right it won't be an exact match, and if cost is not a problem a tank and cover repaint would be better. any paint touch up is subject to some difference. I hope I didn't mislead you.

Charles I completely agree with you that something very close is better than doing nothing at all.
I have seen some pretty nice painting come from a paint can seriously, because a finished paint job is only as good as the preparation work underneath.

Charles,

I feel neither mislead nor misinformed. I learned something and that counts for something. I tried the paint site that Greg turned me on to but they didn't list colors back to '82. I didn't look hard but think that tomorrow when I go back to it there will be contact information. Thanks again to Greg who always seems to come through.

This is a great community and I am lucky to have found it.

I will mention, that the computer match I was referring to is actually a scan of your present paint color including any fading due to age. The problem I run into with factory paint codes is that they don't  alloy for any fadeing or discolorartion. The factory  base coat / clear coat is a two stage system and can not be mixed in a spray, it will require a compressor and a good quality paint gun . by the time you buy the base color ,thinner, clear and catylist , plus lacquer thinner to clean the gun , you've started getting out of the inexspensive amature stage . Not calling you an amature, just saying it is a lot more involved.

Charles you are absolutely right!  But for those folks who like to do it themselves hehehehe money is no object.  Well the little extra they will spend on that anyway hehehehe.
I say this and I have several parts I want to repaint and just wont bite the bullet and buy the paint and gun, maybe one of these days.
