camshaft bearing

does anyone know of a good machine shop? camshaft making noise; and I applied a liberal coat of new oil and no change. does anyone know where i can find camshaft holders? honda only has one of the two sets required. will have to remove and take measurements.

What year are we talking about and I would get some plastigauge and measure first don't hear of many cam holders going out of spec but you never know and the other half of the holder is molded in the head so you would have to replace as a set head and holder !!!

What year model bike??  How many miles?  etc.

Depending on what year, some are known to be noisey and not going bad.

However if it is bad I would contact Dave Dodge, you can find his # on the MOOT site...

What kind of noise??  if cam bearings are the problem they can be replaced.  You should do as Roboto suggested with plastigauge to determine if you need an oversize bearing.  If in the RARE chance the holders are out of round a machine shop should be able to line hone them.  Course you have to take the head off to do it.

There are no bearings on these engines just the head surface and cam holder which I guess are surfaces for the cam to ride in I do not know if they can be salvaged if they out of round not sure on that !!!

Oh wow.  I have never seen no bearings.  Are the 1st gen models like that?

Yep just a boss and the cap for the cam to sit in

85 VF700C Magna 20,000 miles. there are no bearings, just the holders. heard plastigauge could clog oil holes. oil starvation due to blown pushrod oil seal. when i get the cams out, there is probably small metal particles around the lobes and journals. should i rebuild the oil pump?

Plastigauge will be fine just don't get it near the oil holes LOL use it on the holder. You probably ground the lobes off just replace the cams. Oilpump is a maybe not a bad rebuild might check it to see if is in tolerance goodluck !!!

If it were me and I found metallic particles floating around through the engine, I would tear apart, thoroughly clean, measure all tolerances, and rebuild what needed it....
