Luckily, the stud came right out.  Didn't have to clean up the bad weld job, just forced a bit larger socket than the actual nut, and turned it out.  That was a victory, but as the next defeat, I busted another bolt putting on the final drive.  This time I cleaned the threads, wd-40, and check that they weren't binding.  Should I check my wrench?  It was set to the lowest of the range of acceptable torques.  Is there a chance that the Clymer is off?  Does 13 ft lbs on an 8mm bolt sound reasonable?  Frustration hit, but luckily it didn't take much to get the end of the bolt out.

What type of torque wrench do you have, the Clicker or Beam type? It's hard for a 1/2" drive wrench to torque a low number accurately if this is what you have. Also as you did insure all threads, female and male are clean.

Personally I do not use a torque wrench on bolts, I do it by feel unless I am tightening head bolts or something, on low torque values with my 1/2" drive I have ruined clutch baskets but your 8mm bolt should not break at 13 lbs. of torque.

Do you wear glasses, maybe it's time!  :-P

Well, the engine is in the bike, and every part but the fuel tank, seat, and side covers is on.  Then we tried shifting.  The shift feel smooth with no issues, but for some reason, when the bike is engaged in first and the clutch pulled all the way in, the bike is actually in gear.  With all other gears, squeezing the clutch will fully disengage the drive gears.  Any thoughts as to why only first would be affected?  Do I need to adjust the clutch throw?  (My thought is that maybe in first there is slightly less tolerance, but heck).

Also, I forgot the placement of a washer in the back axle assembly.  I couldn't find an exploded view in the clymer, so if anyone has one, it would sure be helpful.  Or if somebody could say where it went(between the final drive and wheel, caliper holder and wheel, etc.) that would be just as helpful.

Anyways, I would love some advice to help me get this things started soon.

Thanks,
Alex

When you say in gear, do mean it will take off and no slipping or it pulls/grabs strong in first gear compared to the others?

Are you refering to the wheel moving while it is on the center stand? If the clutch is working in gears 2-6 it should work the same when it is in 1st. Check the clutch fluid level and if that is ok you may have to bleed it.

You may also have to remove the clutch pack and clean the discs and plates. After oil sits for a while it becomes tacky and can keep the clutch from working properly.

My 350 will stick so bad sometimes if it has been setting for several weeks that it will kill the engine the first time it is put in gear.
That usually breaks it loose and it is fine after that.

Well.  Damn.  I got it running.  Put back together.  It worked great, other than a sloppy sound from the clutch cover area.

I was riding around the apartment complex, with a big goofy smile on my face, when I felt the back in slip just a bit.  I didn't like it, but kept riding (2-3mph).  I put it up, decided to bring the camera out the next day to start trying to sell it, but decided to ride one last time.  I left the garage, took the second 90 degree turn, and the back end came all the way out!  Infuriating, embarrassing, sucky.  It created minimal cosmetic damage, but killed the engine immediately.  I stood the bike up, put it into neutral, and started it without any problems.  I thought I made it out ok, but then I put it in gear.  There was immediately a pulling (it pulled every rotation of the engine it felt like).  Once the clutch was let out, it grabbed fine and rode no problem.  The only time it acts up is in gear with the clutch pulled in.  Warped clutch plates?

And, the sound.  It sounds like a chatter, slop, bolt bouncing around, all at once.  It's not incredibly loud, but can be noticed over the sound of the V and H exhaust.  What gives?

breckel

Anybody?  I really want this thing running.  Has anybody experienced warped clutch plates?
