My buddy has cobra slash cut on his 94 Magna and they are not that loud. Little higher pitch. The bad is that if you don't keep up with the chrome it will blue and yellow.

I have V&H on my 99 and they are loud but not too loud. Deeper tone. I like them but would like to make them a little louder

As far as I know the jardine drags are the loudest.

What I'm wondering is, what are the quietest aftermarket pipes to dial this down?

Thanks for your help guys, I know pipe questions abound in the forums, I've just never seen a list of relative noise.

Regards,
Jimmy

I am not aware of quiet aftermarket pipes, what you need to stick with is stock pipes with no mods. If you can swap endplates as Greg mentioned or find some beat up pipes with good end plates including the baffle.

Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated.  I've fired off a couple of emails to various wreckers to see if I can source a set of used pipes to rob the baffles from.

Considering that I'm basically running straight pipes [stockers without any baffling], would all aftermarket pipes with baffles still be louder.

Magna99

My guess would be no. The Cobras with baffles would be quieter than un baffled stockers since you basically running straight pipe.

I don't believe the pipes are as straight through as you might think. There are metal plates inside the exhaust has to bounce up and over for tuning/back pressure than you have end-plates with a smaller outlet hole.

Aftermarket will have a better sound and different pitch of sound. Loudness might depend on who's listening.

Listen to this, it's what stock sounds like.

Wow, thanks for the link, now THAT's quiet!

I'm going to keep digging around for some stock baffles however, I was wondering if anyone has experience performing the 'un-mod' as explained here: http://www.magnaownersoftexas.com/tips.htm#A1.27

From what it sounds like in the write-up, because the 3/4" pipe inserts into the end of the left over baffle I'd have to shim the copper pipe at the endplate [I have no baffle protruding so the ID is going to be a little larger], but this sounds like a cheap and quick fix - if it works?

I'm thinkin' it wouldn't be as quiet as stock, but right now it's pretty extreme.

I guess the "Edited" part was "Cut" where the friend dumps the bike.  :-P

Most of you know what the insides of the muffler looks like, for those who may not have removed the end plate yet here are a couple of pics, the first pic is of the end plate with the resonator cut off and the tail of the resonator also cut off. Each cut you make will change the sound, first the tail piece, then the resonator and loudest of all is with the endplate completely removed. The second pic is looking up the end of the muffler where you can see the last baffle, it is welded in, a closer look and you'll see a second baffle behind that one. from the welds on the muffler there are probably at least two or three ( I've haven't cut one apart yet to see) I may be wrong but I believe this is the baffle Greg has talked about drilling out, correct me if I'm wrong Greg.

PS if anyone has cut a third gen muffler open from one end to the other I would be interested in seeing a pic of it.

Great posting that again Charles, may help him when he tries to do something with his endcaps.
