I have a 1985 Honda Magna 700cc V45 etc... The bike runs great around town and on the highway. I've owned the bike for 4 years, and I've serviced it (heavy duty tuneup, new clutch, new fork seals, brakes etc..)..

I've noticed however, when I'm on 5th gear on the highway (my highest), I can't get passed 6000 RPM. I'm 6ft2, and weigh 190 lbs.  When I'm doing this, I'm crouched over sport biker style to to reduce drag but no avail.  Since I don't have a speedometer, I can only guess my speed. I believe at 4000 RPM i'm going 65mph, 5,000 RPM i'm going 75mph, and 6000 RPM 85?

I'm wondering if this is a carb issue. Because the supposed top speed of the 700cc Magna is around 125 mph.

What do you think?

First thing is get yourself a speedo! haha You mean 6th gear or do you just stay in 5th. Our transmissions are 6speeds. When im going 60mph in 6th gear my rpm is 4k. so if your in 5th your prm's will be higher by about 500rpm than mine give or take. Yes I would guess the carb may need rebuilt and cleaned. Trying running some seam foam thru the system first. You don't need to crouch over to get that fast enjoy the ride.

Hey Magna86:

I believe your mistaken.  My bike only has 5 gears.  neutral, 1-5th.  My overdrive light comes on when I pop it into 5th gear.

Thanks for your suggestions...I'll try to follow up with them.

Our bikes are six speeds. (double checked manual) First is below neutral. So it goes 1-n-2-3-4-5-6. But our bikes are able to start off in 2nd if you give enough gas. But either way try the suggestions and check your throttle cable for kinks.

Will it get above 6k rpms in neutral on in gears lower than 6th?

Well I'll be a suck egg mule! You mean that there thangs got 6 gears in the box....hmmm.....no wonder I have to push myself off for a running start at stoplights than jump on the back.

Let me tell you about a time I missed the seat......lol

Hey Magna86:

You're right!  I was on the highway the other day riding for about 7 hours (from Rochester,NY to Baltimore, MD), and I tested it.  I guess after owning the bike for 4 years, I just always assumed 5 gears and it became so natural to assume so that I never paid attention when i shifted up.

But yeah...you're right...6 speed.

I'm pretty embarassed!

To my knowledge, just when I'm in overdrive I've tried above 6k.  I guess I should try in a lower gear.  I just thought above 6k, overdrive would be best?

Not really sure.
