I finally picked up from my machinist the finalized version prototype rack I've been working on. Production is beginning as I type this. Should have the first batch by the end of next week. I'll take pics this weekend and get posted to my site by Monday or Tuesday. http://www.cycle-istic.com
All the OEM and aftermarket racks I could find are rated to carry very little weight, from 6 to 10 lbs., and are constructed from very thin-wall tubing. My rack is made from solid billet, and should have no trouble carrying 30-40 lbs or more. Price will be determined once the first batch is underway, depending on actual machining time. We already know the material cost. It should be less, but at least no more than the Hondaline rack, which is rated for less than 10 lbs. I think 3 to 4 times the capacity for the same or less price is a pretty good deal.

Couldn't find a listing for the Magna any more, but hondaparts-direct.com has them for the 750 Shadows, both Spirit and Aero, which appears to be the same rack as for the Magna, for $126.

Speaking of heavy duty luggage racks, the problem I have with mine is that the rack is level and the backrest is angled so anything I strap on the rack usually ends up with all the weight on the very back edge of the rack. I can see how it wouldn't hold much weight. It may not look as good but I'm going to change the angle of the rack so it is 90 degrees with the back rest. I keep a leather pack on the bike all the time and I don't think it will look any worse than the big gap that is under the bag now. Anyone else's rack fit this way?
