I heard of a guy, he had some copper tubing around, so what he did was bungie a tube to each side of the rear tire with the tubes on either side of the front tire.. He then could adjust the rear tire and see how well it was aligned with the front tire..
Seemed like a good system to me..

Very good read ,+1.   This will also ensure proper chain/sprocket alignment as well.

Works..

I bought a laser alignment aiming tool that does basically the same thing but a bit easier and more expensive LoL.

I used that technique on my chain driven bikes.  Old school stuff.

I like to adjust mine by rolling the rear wheel and adjusting until I get the sprocket tracking in the center of the chain. If the rear wheel is out of line the chain will walk to one side of the sprocket or the other, kinda like a belt sander. It's also what causes excessive wear on the sides of the sprocket. What ever method you use to line the rear wheel should leave you with the same result and that is the sprocket running in the center of the chain link, IMO..

It's been a long time ago I thought about sprocket tracking, but that is what we always did.   I really like my driveshaft!  On the string thing, my Father-In-Law has always aligned his cars like that.  I was skeptical at first, but he never had any tire wear problems and the car always tracked and handled fine.
