2nd to 3rd gear noise

2 questions:
1.  I am getting some loud noise when changing from 2nd to 3rd.  It does not do this all the time.  Some times it is as smoot as a babies bottom, but others it real loud and rough.  Any ideas on what this is and how to correct it?
2.  Also is there a way to get the front plugs out without removing the radiator?  I want to check them before MOOTMag.

Yeah there is pull the carbs   LOL they are hard to get to but you do not have to remove the radiator just take the bottom bolts out and swing the radiator forward and you should be able to get to them and the best tool to do it is in your tool kit on the bike.

I would say your clutch lever is not getting pulled all the way in like short shifting. Or maybe it is time for an oil change I know mine lets me know when the oil is losing it's zing

Mine Crashes and bangs into 1st and into 2nd and a little into 3rd unless I'm down in RPM when I shift (below 4 grand). If I'm above that Cluck and I sort of have to drag it into gear.. It is a little better when I have fresh oil, but it still does it.. I've got over 60K on mine and the previous owner didn't take really good care of the bike, so the forks in the tranny are probably a little bent or worn.. Not enough to rip the whole thing apart though!! (Unless I lived in Texas and had some good brain power at a wrench session anyways)

I just installed the factorypro shift star and roller bearing arm/heavy duty spring combo and i love how it shifts now. nice and smooth in all gears, not as clunky, lots less noise, easier to shift at high speeds, easier shifting without using the clutch. between that and the new kevlar clutch at the same time, made a world of difference. pics of the shift star and detent arm, old clutch plate that was blued from over heating i suppose and a pic of the new kevlar clutch plates. note that the shift star pics are not from the magna, but a vfr where i got these pics from.

Chad - Do you have a link to where you got the FactoryPro from and can you provide a little description about what was involved with installing it..
Thanx

I have random clunking when changing gears, all gears- all rpms, sometimes baby bottom smooth, sometimes feels like a heavy metal riff.  No pattern to it.  Up or down shifting.  I use synthetic cycle oil.

go to www.factorypro.com the website isn't the greatest, but click product sales at the top, then click honda, then scroll down to 750cc and find the 3rd gen magna. click the link, scroll down and it will show the shift star on the left. they accept paypal. i've had in in the garage for a year and a half now and just installed it a few weeks ago. basically you have to drain the oil, take off your sprocket cover (3 bolts) , take off your footpeg, exaust heat shield and shift linkage, either drain all the coolant or carefully slide the waterpump out of the way ( i can explain how to do, i tried it bth ways) then take the shifter arm cover off carefully noting where things went, (again i can explain) removing the two shift pawls and springs (the hardest part is to install these, not so hard, but a little tricky) then remove the old spring and arm, next the shift star. reinstall in reverse. i tried to take some pics, but my camera died in the middle, plus i was all geasy :)

it was more like a 1/4" impact drill, snapping not one, but two bolts off when reinstalling the new clutch, lol :) i have no idea what possessed me to use that except it was a new tool i wanted to try out :) found a replacement assy on ebay fairly cheap. i think i learned my lesson about over torquing bolts :) (the 5 brass colored ones below)

I have not had a need to change the plugs but I have over heard Greg say use the plug tool in the Magna tool bag it makes it easier.

It may just be me but mine seems to shift quieter after I oil the chain.

Ithought about that and adjusting the chain.  I adjusted the chain this morning and pulled the back plugs to look at them.  I will let you know if adjusting helped.  My chain was a little too loose.

I adjusted the chain this morning and that seem to help some.  Of course it may have been one of the times is was baby a$$ smooth.  I also pulled the plugs, without pulling the radiator, they were gray and the tips did not show any wear.  They seemed to be clean.  I am still having some hesitation when I accelerate.  Once it kicks in fully, its hang on baby.  This usually takes abouta second or two to kick in.
