3rd gen only has one brake line the 85 magna has two your looking at about 100 to 110 for the brake lines and 65 to 85 for the springs depending on where you get them.

I spent approximately $75 for the SS brake line from my local Cycle Gear store, and ordered the Progressive Springs online for about $55 as I recall.

You will need a way to lift the bike to install the springs.  There is another thread that includes details.

And what was your experience with these upgrades?

How did those springs feel? Brakes?

Thanks

what other non-performance (nothing to make my bike go faster etc..) can I do to my bike?

Thanks.

i drag my pegs when i take sharp corners...

can i raise my bike to create more lean angle?

I'm not interested in trying to up the HP.  Too much money for too little gain.

MY 50 mpg rocks anyhow... :P

Dragging of the foot pegs is OK.. it is a warning that you are leaned as far over as you should go.. You might be able to raise the bike a little by longer rear shocks, but the swing arm will only swing down so far and you don't want to eliminate that for when the bike bounces up, the rear tire maintain contact with the ground.. You also don't want to raise the foot pegs up, because instead of dragging your foot pegs you may start dragging your pipes and leverage the rear tire off the ground in a curve.. (that's what I call "a bad thing")

They were both well worth the money.  The brake line makes the front brake much more "solid" feeling, as there is much less "give" in the brake lever.

The springs stopped the "dive" on braking, and provided a more solid cornering experience.  The only negative is that on rough roads, you feel the bumps a bit more.  Not so important if you don't grip the handlebar too hard.  Did not have near as much effect on rough roads as the switch to a Mustang seat had.

steel braided lines a very nice to have.  the brakes feel so much more solid and responsive.

So I called the bike shop (honda) that has done all the major work on my bike (clutch, tuneup, forks)...to ask for a quote on how much it would be to get the tires put on, progressive springs, and steel brake lines....

Rear tire $168 for labor if I buy the rear tire from them ...DUNLOP 4D4 or w/e...for $120.
Rear tire $188 for labor if I buy my own rear tire and give it to them.
They won't install car tires.

Front tire...same prices.

Progressive springs?  $200 labor + cost of springs.

Steel brake lines $200 labor + cost of steel brake lines

For kicks, let's put in the speedo as well.

$200 labor + $300 speedometer OEM = $500.

Fix my softball sized dent in tank ~ quoted by a place that fixes dents in cars/motorcycles....  $200-$300 (to fix dent, and repaint)

so folks...rounding this all up.

$600 (for tires/labor) + $300 (springs/labor) + $250 (brakes/labor) + $500 (speedometer) + $300 (fix dent/repaint)

=/~ $1950!

The Kbb for my magna is $2200 in excellent condition.

I've been able to get craigslist offerings for $1800.

On top of the cost I bought my bike for $3000 (used dealership) + the cost of repairs I did $2000 (clutch, forks, major tuneup, radiator, thermostat... the custom work $558 (saddlebag holders/luggage rack))...

= $5000

So if I do all the repairs itll be = $5000 + $2000 (rounding) = $7000.

Compare this to selling it on the used market in excellent condition...

$7000 - $2200 = $4800 loss.

....

....

....

...............

............................OUCHHHHH.

I think its time for a new bike :(

$200 for changing springs and $200 for break lines is simply criminal. No other word for it.

I really can't spare another cent to give to this Honda shop.  I mean they seem to be fair/honest hard working people but I've basically given them another "Magna" in service costs.

Not to mention, after I pay for service, my bike always seems to need something else.

For example, when I paid for my forks to be fixed, I asked them to check over whole bike to make sure everything worked...

200 miles later on a trip back to college in upstate ny....

my speedometer stopped working completely....

wow...geez....thanks!

.............

If no locals meet my $1700-$1900 range for the bike, when I get some vacation time........

I'm SERIOUSLY considering the Texas option.

Not just to save money but to meet yall (put these names to faces), and to learn how to do this labor with some really good mechanics.

We'll see what the future holds...I'll keep the board posted.

Thanks Allen.  Hope to be able to take you up on it.

Oh yeah one little thing....prior to switching to a new rear tire .... (if I go this route)

I need to release a little bit of hooligan in me that I've been holding in since I saw Mad Max when I was kid.

Not just any kind of burnout....

A rolling burnout in a circle...and as the 360 is completed....pop a wheelie and ride off into the sunset full throttle.

:) :) :)

Will need to get this on video!

Edit:  This was done on a 1979 KZ1000 in the movie Mad Max....beautiful bike...precursor to the Honda v65 Magna :) and the Suzuki GS1100E!
