I am looking to replace the oil viewing window on a vintage Magna. Has anyone ever done it or know where to find parts? The parts fiche shows the side cover as one piece but I'm sure there has to be a way to change it. If I can't find parts my only option it seems is to weld a piece of aluminum in place.

TIA

Check out this.  It is the directions for replacing the master cylinder sight glasses.  It also has the supplier link for ordering new lenses.  All you need to do is get the corrrect size.  I wouldn't think that the oil sight glass replacment would be much different.

PS. Billy C over there sells the complete kits for the MC including replacemt stainles hex screws for the covers.

The link Kerry posted is where I started finding info. for the master cylinder glass. You can order from Otto Frei and Jules Borel Co.

I would think that you could do the oil window the same way.  Just pop it out from the inside and glue in a new window.  You would need to measure the size of the window to order the correct one.  They had a bunch of differnt ones on that site.  The master cylinder replacments seem to hold up under the pressure of the hydrolic break fluid when you pump the brakes or clutch so I think it would also  hold up under the oil pressure.

I checked the http://www.johnernst.com/sight_windows_p50.html and it looks like those would work if you tap the case after punching out the old sight window as long as they don't stick to far into the case.  Just have to make sure to use a good gasket/o-ring with them so they don't leek.

Tapping the case cover isn't that much of a problem but I would rather it look as close to stock as possible. My other concern is the oil temp.'s effect on glass. The stock window appears to be some type of plastic/acrylic since I melted the outer layers of the window with some chemicals today. The window appears to be pressed in and has a seal made onto it. I'll see if I can tap it out in one piece to get some accurate measurements tomorrow.

Update:

Well I punched out what I thought was the window and it turns out to be a freeze plug that has a rubber coating. As of yet I haven't found a freeze plug with a seal coating or other suitable replacement. It measures 1.575" in diameter.

Well I would think that a Auto parts store would have all sizes of freeze plugs about the rubber coating well that poses a different problem but maybe the next size up might fit.....

Greg, you know Billy is a member here as well #368.

If you do a search over on the //www.v4hondabbs.com site there is a good write up on doing the MC lenses.  I need to get a set from him myself one of these days.
