My V65 has a bad clunk while shiftng from first to second gear. My V45 is ver smooth. Last night I had both bikes up on the center stand and in first gear. I measured the play in both. The V45 had 1 1/4" of tire rotation from cog stop to cog stop and the V65 had 1 7/8" that is 5/8" inch of free wheeling more than Maggie. Could it be in the Tranny or the Final or the drive shaft?

TIA Dan

It could easily be in the drive shaft. That's a powerful engine and if it has been ridden hard that could be it. I don't know about the tranny and the distance from stop to stop. You should Google first to second gear clunk on a v65 Magna. One thing to remember too is that your V65 is half again larger than your V45 which could mean nothing is wrong. I know that the 3rd Gens clunk from first to second.

Hi Mr Warner,
If I do have an issue I hope you are right about the drive shaft. It would be a cheaper fix. What is your location, I see you have comcast is that an Eastern cable company? I am in Pittsburgh PA. Thanks for your input.

QuoteIt is normal.
However, V65 are known to have 2nd gear issues.  Yours could be on the way out.

How can you tell the difference between a 2nd gear issue and a so called normal clunk. The bike only has 23,000 miles on it.

Put it in 2nd gear and nail the throttle. If it stays in gear you are good. If it slips into neutral, you have a bad 2nd gear.

Do you mean at a dead stop or just shif into 2nd gear while moving? I think if I did that on my bike I would be seeing my reflection in the gas cap. Sorry about the picture I was just practicing.

Just accelerate from a stop sign in first and when you shift into 2nd just open it up and run it up to around 8g's if it stays in gear you are good.
