I think I have a California bike.  When i did the carbs there were a whole mess of hoses that seemed to run into other hoses that ran into little plastic devices from somewhere else.

Is there a way to check for certain?  serial # maybe?

Also, if it is indeed a Cali bike... can i take that extra stuff out?

Yep sounds like a Cali bike.

Unfortunately everyone I have ever known who has tried to remove all that mess, has ended up putting it back..  They never run right without the mess..

might want to check out the magna riders forum on Delphi. There are multiple members there that have removed most if not all of the cali stuff without a hitch. One guy knows all about it, i think he is on here too. his name is Chokse. edit: here's his info:  http://www.magnaownersoftexas.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=332

I would bet my left, well, I would bet a lot that is a Cali bike.  My 1984 was and the carbs all had extra lines running to a charcoal canister.

as long as you properly block off the lines into the carbs you should be fine.  that or get a set of carbs off a non-cali model.

Chokse

Yep.  Block off the metal tubes running into the cylinder heads (I removed the tubes and fabricated some covers for the openings in the cylinder heads).  Then, remove the hoses from the carbs and block off the 4 open tubes.  Also be sure to remove all the hoses and stuff under the tank and under the left carb side cover (except for the pre-air filter).  That should do it.  It will run just fine like that, but if you can score a set of non-Cali carbs on Ebay, do that.  They have different air jets inside and will make it run even better.
