At my place, southwest of Austin a few miles.  Not far from The Salt Lick Restaurant.  Jesse is coming up from Houston to retrieve his bike after swapping out the pipes.  I may be into the forks on a couple of my bikes. Everyone is welcome.  May ride a few miles through the Hill Country back roads after we are done.

Send me a PM if you are coming, and I will return detailed directions.  Most mapping software is off about 1/2 mile from my front gate, and doesn't even know about the back way in from the west.

I'll bring my Carbtune for anyone that wants to sync their carbs. I've synced about 6 different Magnas and I've seen the settings range from "close" to "all over the place". If you've bench synced your carbs lately then you'll probably be close, with negligible differences. But if you don't know, then it might not hurt. I also have a handy tool for adjusting the idle adjustment screws while the carbs are on the bike.

We were not able to sync Rick's carbs.  We will need another session to remove them and figure out what gives.  The #1, non adjustable cylinder showed substantially more vacuum than the others at idle.  As we adjusted the others, the idle went up, and the spring return was not effective in bringing it down.  At 2000 rpm, they balanced perfectly.  You could hold the throttle closed with the handle, and when you did that, two of the cylinders showed less vacuum than the #1, although not as much as when we started.  We ran out of time, and as they were well synced at higher rpm, we went riding.

Did not eat at The Salt Lick, as there was a 45 minute wait -- we got there after 2 p.m.  Rode on to Wimberley where we ate lunch and gassed up.

It was hot, but we had a fine ride.  Jesse brought a friend to drive a cage, and they are heading back to Houston this morning. They decided to stay in town as he needed to see other friends before he left this morning.

Haven't heard from Rick, but presume he made it home OK.  We parted about 4:45 p.m. at Fisher, TX.

On a side note, when we got back to my place, there was a new calf on the ground.  Healthy and strong.  Good day.

Somehow, that would NOT be a good day at my house!!!

I'm home safe and sound after a great time, food, ride, friends.

I am not looking forward to pulling the carbs again; I'll play around some more before going that way.  It will have to wait until I get a cool spell or very early in the mornings.

Rick, I have been thinking about this some more, and I think maybe you have a small vacuum leak on the rear bank.  We may not need to actually remove the carbs -- can we get to the intakes by removing the tank and air filter?

You could ride up one afternoon during the week, bring your toothbrush, and we can get up before dawn the next morning and have another go at it.

I am not sure the imbalance in the vacuum at idle is such a big deal, but the throttle return could be...

Lawrence,

I plan to try to get back to where it was when we started.  The throttle return worked well then and the imbalance wasn't hurting anything much.  I can ride it like that for as long as needed.

I'm guessing we got one of the carbs adjusted too "open" so that as the throttle returns one barrel closes completely then it can't go any farther.  That may be leaving one of the others open too much.  Number 4 was turned all the way in when we quit.  The hard part is finding a tool that will do the job.

I need it running OK soon because my inspection expired the end of June.

I can spray starter fluid around the carbs to check for a vacuum leak.  I've never done that, but have read about it.

When we get around to it, I'll take you up on the offer to try again.

First I went to Harbor Freight and bought any tool that looked flexible enough to adjust the carbs.  Just to cover all bases I stopped at Pep Boys on the way home.  They had a small flexible driver; it was even called a Carburetor Adjustment Tool.  It isn't perfect, but it works well enough.

During our 0.02" downpour this morning it was cool, so I backed out all three screws and tried it.  The idle returns to 1k nicely now.  I haven't ridden it yet, but I'm sure I can get by like this until we have a chance to balance them.  There is still something not right because the idle speed adjustment still has no effect.

No I need to find places to store all the neat, shiny, new tools I didn't use.

Well, there is no such thing as too many tools!!

We definitely need to examine the throttle mechanisms to sort this out.

At least you got enough rain to measure -- just barely.  We got a "six inch rain" -- the median distance between the mudballs in the dust!

I think when you get them off and bench sync them you should be fine this will also show you where the problem is.
