In light of Jerry's bad news (bad that the bike was damaged, good that he is ok) and the fact that it is time to renew my insurance for the year, I was wondering what coverage you guys opted for.

I have full coverage, and this year the premium is $160.  What gets me is that in that I pay $52 for underinsured/uninsured motorists.  So not only do I pay for insurance for me, I pay for any other yahoo who doesn't bother to obey the law.

I guess I could drop it (and a few other options) but I don't know if that is a gamble I want to take.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Whether I am getting ripped off or not, there is some peace of mind (for me and and my wife) in knowing that I am covered.  Maybe that is the bottom line. Any thoughts? dc

$160 is cheap. I'd say the $52 is worth the peace of mind. Keep in mind that it's probably high because they know it's a higher likeliness of happening.

$120 per year, full coverage, but I live in South Carolina.  Keep the uninsured/under insured coverage, Lord knows I've seen enough friends/co-workers get into wrecks and the other jerk didn't have insurance or enough.

I have had full coverage on everything for years, but even when I only had liability I aways added under/uninsured motorist coverage.  There are too many yahoo's out there who just don't care (losers) about anyone.  Also, the deductable for UM is usually lower than your collision insurance deductable.

Quite a few years ago, I was hit in an intersection in my pickup by a woman (at fault) in a borrowed car which had no insurance (the woman or the car owner) and the woman had no drivers license.  It had been revoked already for driving habitually without insurance.  They took her from the scene on a back board and your tax dollars paid for her recovery, I'm sure.

No need for a reason other than the journey.

I was leaning toward the full coverage, and your thoughts helped seal the deal.  $160 for high limits and low deductibles is not that bad, and amounts to less than a coke a day.  Plus, as you mentioned, there is a peace of mind that comes with knowing that you are covered regardless of others take on insurance.

Compared to my family's health insurance (about $20 a day with a $5k deductible & no maternity), motorcycle insurance is dirt cheap.  Maybe Progressive will get in into health insurance.  dc
