Ok gang....somebody educate this newby.  Why does my 82 v45 need 2 throttle cables?  I know the first one works the carb linkage (verified with running bike) but what  is the back one for?  And where is the best place to get cables for a vintage like this?

I believe the back cable guarantees positive return.  Without it, there is at least the chance that due to a malfunction you could be out of control with a wide open throttle condition.

It also gives you a spare throttle cable to get home on if your primary one breaks.  Of course you have to have the tools and know-how to swap them on the road, but it has been done.

Having recently taken apart the handgrip and throttle cables on my 3rd generation Magna I can verify what Curtis said. I could easily see from my carburator linkage that the second throttle cable ensures a quick snap back in the event the primary one did not.

For cables you might want to check with Dave Dodge (www.drp123.com). He sells braided stainless ones with teflon liners. He probably has them for the vintage Magnas.  Be sure to tell him MOOT sent you. :)

Thanks Jesse.  I hope his web site works soon.  I ordered both new ones today from a local shop that has some aftermarket ones.  The only one that has some rough spots is the back one, but I think I will go ahead and replace both just so I will know they are new (since I just recently got the bike).  I hope to get it all shined up real soon and add some saddle bags and a windshield.

Just noticed that DD has become one of our newest members so maybe he will chime in here. Welcome aboard Dave.
