Hi All,
I am getting ready to do a valve adjustment and use a Carbtune Manometer for my carb sync. Please tell me what tools do I need to buy to get to my butterfly adjuster screws and pilot screws or air/fuel screws for my drop off test.
I have the carbs off and they have been rebuilt and cleaned using a Billy C kit. I want to first adjust the valves DD method, then a sync then the drop off test.
Thanks
I bought a new OTC leakdown tester from tooltopia best price in town.

Syncing carbs
As far as I know Billy C. bench syncs his carbs so I don't know that you'll need to sync your carbs on the bike.

One school of thought is that you need to need to do an on-bike sync because the bike ages and different cylinders will have different compression levels. But the other school of thought is that if the bench sync is very accurate and your butterflies turn out to be far off then you have a problem elsewhere, like the valves. So you should always check for vacuum and compression leaks first.

I'm not sure what you mean by the Dave Dodge valve adjustment method. I've heard of his recommendations for the idle mixture or the idle drop procedure. But I would definitely check and adjust the valves first using the service manual guidelines. Then I would use the gauges to check the carb sync once they were on the bike. Then I would adjust the idle mixture.  (You might want to flip flop the carb sync and the idle mixture adjustment. Check with Dave or the shop manual.)

As far as tools.

Valve check and adjustment
I don't know what types of valves the first generation bikes have. But at the very least you'll need feeler gauges to check the valves. If you have shim valves and you need shims then you'll have to either buy a shim kit or order the shims you need. Dave Dodge gave me a real good prices on shims. But I also got a shim kit. I would recommend the K&L shim kit on Amazon. It's made in Japan and has size ranges that are much more usable for the Magna. There's another brand called "Hot Cams" but they are Chinese made and the quality control was so bad on the set that I ordered that I was missing whole sizes. The K&L kit also has 4 shims per size while the Hot Cams kit only has three.

  • Feeler gauges
  • Shims
  • Micrometer
  • Possibly a valve tool if you have tappet valves

Idle drop or Idle Mixture

  • Possibly a D-Tool bit if the 1st generation carbs use that type of mixture screw.
  • Or screw driver bit for a regular mixture screw head (slotted or phillips)
