Title: new to me '96 Magna
Post by: Brad Badgett on January 04, 2007, 01:54:50 PM
I sold the '82 in Oct., and bought an '96 12-27-06.  I need some advice on windshields for 3rd gen ( it has National Cycle fork brackets on it , but no shield), saddle bags, and sissy bar-sixpack rack, best sources, etc.  When I bought  the '82 3 1/2 years ago it came with all of these items.  I have noticed at MM's similar shields among 3rd gens.

Hi Brad. Good to hear from you.

If you can keep from buying new brackets then that will save you a bundle. I think Greg knows of a good national cycle shield for the Magna.

I myself, have a Memphis Shades Pop Top (fork mounted). Allen has a Memphis Hellcat (handlebar mounted). We recently switched bikes on a ride and I believe he preferred my Pop Top to his Hellcat, but not enough to go out and buy one. :)  I got the same amount of buffeting on my helmet from his Hellcat but I noticed the shield wobbled a lot more. However, I believe the Hellcat has more adjustment options.

One of the best resources I found for the shields is Phat Performance Parts out of California. Free shipping on orders over $100 too.

On the '82, I had a Nat. Cycle Steet EX. It was compact but effective for highway riding and did not effect mpg much.  I mainly want one that keeps the wind off of my chest at highway speeds and just large enough to tuck under when a semi approaches, or in heavy rain.  Thanks for the reply.  Decisions, decisions!  There are too many to choose from.

Brad you can simply buy a replacement shield for your mounts if you want to stick to National Cycle.  If you could take a PIC of the mounts I probably can tell you witch shield fits?
They have not only handlebar mounted but fork mounted shields.
As far as from you, well you could swing a stick blindfolded and hit more than you can imagine to buy from.  However I have dealt with National Cycle directly a few times in the past and their customer service was great!!!!

Leatherlyke saddlebags.  Best source: ebay (be patient, bought mine used for $200 ) otherwise about $400.  They are very easy to take on and off in less that 3-5 minutes.  Hardbags with locks.  Put'em on and travel, take'em off and cruise around town.  You will love the 3rd gen.  Congrats

Greg-

Thanks for the info/pics on the fork brackets.  I will try to call or e-mail NC on Monday.  I have been pricing/looking at sissy bars/brackets, and saddle bags.  I tend to favor the TourMaster nylon, similar to my old Hondaline saddlebags on the '82.  There are several sissy bar sources.  Cost will probably determine where I purchase.  Thanks again.

I also recommend the Hondaline engine guards. They can save your bacon in the event of a tip over. On the sissy bars, keep in mind that your brand of sissy bar will likely determine the rear rack as well.

The cheapest place for Honda OEM parts is www.hondaparts-direct.com out of Texarkana.  I got the OEM engine guards there for $130 (as opposed to $180). I can track down the part number for that and the luggage rack if you need it.
