Title: 96 Magna Pulse
Post by: Scholar on January 10, 2007, 08:13:40 AM
I have a 96 VF750C that suddenly decided one day it wanted to turnover but not fire.  It had a good battery and plugs.  I began pulling plugs to check for spark; I had none at all 4 :?   Using the troubleshooting section of the Honda Service Manual I began making test; voltage from battery through ignition switch, stop switch, ICM, coils - all good; checked stator and ignition pulse generator.  The ignition pulse generator had an abnormal ohm reading of 300; according to manual should be 450-550.  The Service man at a local dealer said he didn't think that was my problem; he said I should bring it in to have the bike analysed.  I'm sure he did :? .  Has anyone ever had a Ignition Pulse Generator go bad?  Will it fuction properly at 300 ohms?

The first thing I'll ask is how Old is the battery I mean good and age are 2 different things the 3rd gens are very picky about battery juice hehehe and will give all kinds of symptoms so that would be the first thing to check. This is a common ?? during the cold months as this is when most batterys show their true colors.....

Battery is less than a year old.  I even jumped it off the car battery just to make sure I have plenty of kick.

You do not need to apologize for that question, because I would not put it past me    But yes it was flipped to Run; not to mention the fact the starter and motor turn over, I just have no spark to lite the fire.  Thanks again for your input :)

In Magnas, I have heard of the contacts in the red ignition kill switch getting corroded or going bad. So when the switch is on it's not really "on". You might want to try taking that switch apart and cleaning the contacts.

I think I know of at least two other MOOT members who have had that problem. One was fixed by cleaning the switch, the other had to buy a new switch. If the latter is the case try pricing it at hondaparts-direct.com.

Jesse is correct the switch contacts can cause this symptom.
