While riding to the Scout Store in Waco today to buy my son's Arrow-of-Light stuff, (I know...too many details), the turn signal switch broke...*argh* :evil: :cry: I have been told by an OEM parts supplier that it is a discontinued item for my '84 V45. :roll:

Can I repair the switch?
To replace, do I have to replace the entire control unit including the turn signal switch, horn button, etc?
Does anyone know where I can get NOS or used in working condition?

We need a bit more information to understand your definition of "broke". If you broke the switch piece clean off, then a new/used one is in store. If it just doesn't work anymore, you can disassemble, clean the contacts, and grease the slide pin. Many options but we need to see or hear a bit more to understand fully.
You could also try tuner cleaner or something in that order. I was having trouble with my turn signal switch some time not making contact. Works on any electrical contact.
Tragically, the switch innards are broken. No click; no return; no cancel; no nothing. The knob and lever are still there. It's loose as if it isn't attached to anything internally, although I can't pull it out of the block. Its just busted..! :evil:
The plastic internal piece may have cracked. The switch is made up of a flat plastic piece and a metal piece with tabs. Inside the switch is three really small springs and three flat copper contacts. I just pulled mine apart 2 weeks ago and actually broke the plastic piece. I used some super glue, cleaned all the contacts, put it all back together with good results. Check if it is that plastic piece and try gluing it if it is broken.
Be very careful when separating the metal back from the plastic. The springs are about 1/4" long and maybe 1/16" in diameter.

Hey...! Way good news. I had a line on a good used switch assembly which I planned on buying this weekend. For educational purposes, I decided to remove and disassemble the broken switch. Once I got it apart though, I discovered that it was NOT broken, just the screw that holds and around which pivots the switch lever had come loose. A little bit of trial and error. Some tweeking to repair the stripped hole, a little grumbling but no actual swear words, (my wife and son were "supervising"), and no blood (which is amazing, 'cause I usually always bleed as a result of working on a vehicle of any kind), and I'm back in business with directional indicators.

Glad it was an easy fix Trapper. As far as the blood, for myself, I think that I am not working unless I draw blood somehow, even if it's just a paper cut when I am paying bills.
I guess it turned out good. :lol:
