Title: Headlight Adapter
Post by: 2fs2ns on March 27, 2007, 03:08:02 PM
Found this on Ebay...

Will allow you to use non-metric headlights on your metric bike.  Lots of Harley/chopper headlights out there...

The only problem with that adapter is that the stock turn signals attach to the old headlight bracket. If you get that adapter you'll also have to come up with another turn signal mount or different turn signals all together.

Just wanted to point that out.

So are my turn signals not stock then?

Does anyone know dimensions of the VTX headlights?  Diameter, depth?

Thanks!

Your turn signals look stock, however they are not in the correct position or connected to the headlight mount...
If you look real close you will see a 1/4" or so size rod coming from the headlight mount, on the end out by the fork tube it turns 90° and has a blind nut attached.
Your turn signals attach there to keep them from rotating...

Ahh, I see that now...hmm, never noticed.

They haven't rotated yet since I've had them, so I don't imagine that's really an issue.
Title: Been looking at that too . . .

However, I have a friend who can probably fabricate that part out of some scrap aluminum in his shop.  He has a machine that can spit one of those out in a minute (or less) so I'm gonna go that route.  I have just been waiting to get a headlight.

There are a couple on ebay that I am looking at, and after making a mock-up of each one I decided that the 5 3/4" x 9" is easier on the eyes than the 4 1/2" by 7" model.  With shipping the bigger one is about $100.  I just figure I'd save up a little more.  dc

Well I'd be a customer if he can :)

Would it have that same polished appearance as the ebay mount?  Or would you chrome it?

I did have my friend at the machine shop make me that part, and I bought a headlight on eBay that looks identical to the one pictured above.

When I went to install it, I used my dremel tool to cut the welds which attach the rod to the headlight mount.  That way the little 1/4" rod is still there, but the rest of the old bracket and headlight are gone.  The whole swap took about 30 minutes, and much of that time was hiding the wires.  I love the look of the headlight, and it is much brighter than the original.  Maybe the best bang for the buck as far as all my mods are concerned.  dc

One more point on the stock turn signal location......
When the forks are turned full into the stops, the stock location for the turn signals put 'em right in a 'pocket of open space between the tank and other stuff. If the signals are moved up you risk banging into the tank or limiting the turn radius (really handy at slow speed sharp turns)
Something to look out for.....

Good to know, mine are up about halfway in that gap, and they're not contacting anything.

I was looking at your pic and wondering what happens if you drop the bike. Looks like the signal could be shoved into the tank. Common problem on the stock 1st gen Magna. I relocated mine partly because of it.

Probably true.  I'd better not drop it then!

I love the way the VTX headlight looks...  but,,, since I can't change my headlight and have the ability to go between tour windshield and Magna Deluxe fairing, I was wondering if there is a bulb replacement that can offer more light?  Has anyone mounted aux lights to a Deluxe that looked nice?

I'm thinking that light might be a little on the narrow side, isnt' the VTX like 8" across?  This ones just under 6".

Phillips Vision Plus bulbs are a bit brighter than stock at the same wattage or just bump the wattage. I think Murph carries the Vision Plus. If you go up very much on the watts you should add a relay and maybe a high temp H4 socket. The 1st Gen Magna sockets will melt with a high wattage bulb. A possible source for H4 bulbs in non standard wattages is http://www.rallylights.com/hella/H4.asp. I am not connected with them, I did order my bulbs from them and was happy with the service. Or just do a Google search for H4 bulbs.
