Title: Jet kit...without baffles Need it or don't need it
Post by: Instructor50 on March 28, 2007, 03:08:40 PM
I'm going to cut my baffles out of my pipes.  I'm curious though if I will have to get a jet kit for my carbs or can I just adjust the air/fuel mixture screws enough to compensate?

Buddy of mine said cut'em and see what happens when adjusting the screws before I buy.

What do you guys think?

If you're doing what is know as the "muffler mod" you're not really cutting out the baffles but rather the resonators near the end of the pipe. The back pressure does not really change so you do not need to re-jet the bike. Greg will hop in here if I am incorrect.

Having said that... I performed the muffler mod myself and did not care for the sound. I recommend you listen to someone else's bike that has the mod. One thing is that modded mufflers vibrate at just the right frequency to really "drone" through your helmet when you're sitting on the bike. They are particularly annoying in the 3 to 5,000 rpm range, and made my ears ring. I had to start wearing earplugs even on short commutes.

I now have Vance and Hines pipes on my bike and they are much quieter and easier on the ears in the mid-range. They get louder in the top end but do not have the "tinny" sound of the modded pipes. I now only wear ear plugs on longer/high speed rides.

If you're in the Houston area I have a set of modded pipes that we can stick on your bike and you can try them out.

It will change the airflow a bit, but not enough to warrant jets..  Although I would highly recommend the needle shims, along with pilot jet adjustment....

To comment on your suggestion Magna Man, I am doing the mod listed in the tips & tricks section of the MOOT web page.  So for that I don't need to jet anything?

And Greg, you mentioned doing a needle adjustment?  Do I have to buy a whole kit for that or do you have some part numbers of some needles I can buy and just do that?

Thanks for the advice both of you.

You can buy just the shims for the needles from http://www.magnaownersoftexas.org/drp.html and that will take care of your needs.

When  you drill out the rivets on resonators be sure to remove all loose metal from inside the pipes.at high rpm's this creates excessive noise. This happened to me and now I don't need to wear earplugs anymore.

Or, you can send a SASE and I'll send them to you at no charge. Just PM me for the address.
And it's OK, Dave won't mind at all.

Andrew I should give ya a buzz to see if we can get a large supply of the needle shims, as I do probably 15 a year LoL.
Last time I went to Radio Shack and found some but alas I have maybe 4 left LoL.
