Title: Aftermarket seats
Post by: DaWood on August 04, 2005, 09:03:41 AM
Anybody have an opinions they would like to share on aftermarket seats?  I have found that after about 30 mins of riding my tailbone starts to let me know he doesn't appreciate the stock Magna seat.  I was looking at the Mustang Wide Vintage Style 1 piece seat.  Just wanted to see what you guys out there had to say...

I never had a problem with the stock seat (5'7" and 175 lbs).

I switched to the Mustang seat and it moved me up a few inches and back a few--tough on a short guy.  I put the seatback all the way forward, and it's nice.  I suppose getting the handlebars pushed back would help me.

Overall, I like it, but use the stock seat for around town.

The rear seat is much more comfortable, for passengers.

If you ride much with a passenger I can say that the Mustang is absolutely the way to go PERIOD.
If you ride mostly solo then you have a another choice, Corbin, most folks either love or hate the Corbins.
Hope this helps.

Does anyone in the Houston area have a Corin Gunfighter seat on their 3rd generation Magna?  I'd love to go for ride and swap out the seats to see if I doesn't give me numb-butt.

I've looked that the Mustangs and they are my second choice for two reasons:
1. Their wide touring seat and big passenger seat domesticate the bike too much for me.
2. After track day, I especially like to be able to move around on my seat in the corners. I think the Corbin looks like it will be easier than the Mustang.

I'm going to have to get another seat before the trip to MootMag otherwise I won't be able to walk when I get there. :)

Have any of you have experience with Saddlemen Travelcade seat? Specifically the Explorer model.

I have no experience with any of their seats. I have researched them though. Although they have quite a few listed the Explorer is the only one in production. Saddleman lists it for $389.95.

I really liked their Solo seat for the Magna, which looks like a comfortable version of the stock seat in one piece configuration, but it is not in production either. Hence the reason I am looking at the Corbin gunfighter.

I may be wrong about this but it seems I remember this topic being discussed on the Delphi board a couple of times about Saddlemen seats and if I remember correctly even though it's listed on the site they no longer make any Magna seats, even the Explorer.  They do pop up on eBay from time to time.

Well, I called them about a month ago, and that's where I got my information. Of course I wouldn't be surprised if the Saddlemen employee I talked to was mistaken, but he did actually look them up on the computer and said the Explorer was available. I guess the only way to really find out would be to try to buy it. :)

Bam Bam, sorry, I just saw your post. Thanks a lot. That would be great! I just  started planning a ride this Sunday with two other people. I'm introducing a friend of mine to someone else because my friend wants to try out his Honda Interceptor before he buys one. So it will be a V4 fest.

It will be a longer ride and a good time to test out another seat. You are welcome to join us. We plan to hit some roads that Tom told me about on the Northwest side up by Hempstead, Plantersville and Navasota.

Any other Mootsters up for it? We'll probably get started around 10:00 on Sunday? If there's some interest, I guess I'll post something in the Tavern section.

Yeah, that's why I threw that disclaimer in first

Anyone know of a pad to throw on the back of a corbin gunfighter so that i don't have to put the stock seat on my bike when she wants to go for a ride? I am not looking to spend 350 on another seat but don't like making her uncomfortable and i hate the stock seat... I was thinking if there is a way of putting the stock passenger seat temporarily on the corbin...

I've heard good things about Airhawk pads but they will cost you about $150.

I'm 6'0" 225lbs and I hated the stock seat, went numb after 20-30 minutes.  I have a Corbin Gunfighter on my '01 Magna now and I really like it.  Seemed a bit too hard at first but it breaks in pretty quick. Plus it looks great.
Title: Corbin Gunfighter vs. Original
Post by: dc112675 on September 11, 2006, 01:29:13 PM
I had the magna a couple of months b4 I installed the gunfighter seat.  At 6'2' and 185 the stock seat was ok.  I even went 400 miles in 24 hours and never felt too bad.   At that time my gas mileage was bad (later found out it was the plugs) so I was stopping every 100 miles anyway.

I say all of that to say I love the look of the GF and the higher back is nice.  If you notice the gf scoops out, giving you maybe 6" of support.  The OEM seat is more flat, which makes sliding around a little easier.  In addition, the OEM seat tilts forward, and I was always sliding forward.

BUT . . . while the GF looks better, has better support, and is not as slick, it does have its shortcomings.  Mainly the fact that it offers very little cushion.  You feel every bump, and when you go over a speed bump, you have to stand on the pegs a bit to keep you from feeling the bump shoot through your back . . . it reminds me of my MX days.

My final conclusion is this: if you take long trips, like the sleek look of the GF, or your body already has some built in cushion, go with the GF.  If you take short trips, spend time on bumpy roads, or don't mind the grandpa look, stick with the OEM.  For looks alone I am going to keep the GF.

As for the mustang seat, I have no experience so I will defer to those who have.  Good luck, dc
