Title: 98 Magna dripping....
Post by: chieninhouston on April 12, 2007, 05:24:05 AM
Hi, guys,

After riding aboout 50 miles yesterday. Parked my 98 Magna in the garage. Found water on the floor later. Did not have time to check until this morning. Water was dried out. Left some whiteish mark on the floor. Will check further this weekend.

Any ideas will be helpful. Such as what might be the cause, what to look for, etc. Thanks.

Make sure the raditor cap is twisted on completely.  My cap was just a tiny bit off and it was leaking fluid.  Just a quick twist and the thing fixed.
Title: It is confirmed from reservior

Finally, got a chance to ride again. The coolant dripping from the reservior after the ride.
The radiator cap was tied. But coolant level dropped few inches after cooling down.
Looks like the pressure in cooling system built up after riding. What could be the reason? How do I check? Fan not working? Or water pump is going out? How to identify the source? thanks.

Took a closer look at the radiator cap. The Rubber seems to be unsmooth, and deteriated. Maybe to a point that it could not hold the proper pressure, hence letting the hot coolant pass through. So I think I am going to get a new cap first. Maybe that is all it takes. Will let you guys know the result. Thanks.

The radiator cap is a good place to start. A friend of mine had a car that just didn't run well. He spent tons of money trying to fix the problem. He finally sold it cheap to a good ol' boy. In a couple days, the feller came back with a fifth of whiskey and a couple six packs. He was happy as a coot. "All it needed," he said to my friend as he passed a libation, "was a new radiator cap." That doesn't speak well of the mechanics he took it to but it does remind me of an old saying: Look for the simplest things first.

Did a 110 miles ride today. The new radiator cap was holding up, everything ran normal. Thank you all for helping. I am glad it was an easy fix. Can't wait to ride some more.
