Title: Deer Whistles?
Post by: MagnaDaddy on April 13, 2007, 10:59:47 AM
Does anybody have any experience with devices like the hornet or other electonic deer whistles?

My commute is largely rural and while I haven't seen any deer yet, there have been a number of rabbits and quail I "almost took home for dinner"

I'd rather not have a close encounter of the deer-kind if you know what I mean...

I'm glad you asked only because I am interested, not because I know. I think I read they didn't work that well, but don't know.

I live out in the sticks too; I had so many close calls with deer I decided to try the loud jardine drag pipes to keep them away.  I have not had any close calls since installing the jardines two years ago; careful though, some folks here will tell you that you are a very bad person for using loud pipes.

I had some whistles on my bumper of the truck.  A friend riding with me asked if they work because he said I do not hear them while sticking his head out the window.  I told him if he rides on the hood and when I get up to 45 you can hear them.  At that point he said oh there they are I can hear them now.

I used them for about 4 years had no close calls before or after so in short I don't know if they work or not.

My friend that I ride with all the time has deer whistles added to his Magna.  He has to travel through some rural areas to get home at 3am for the past 2+ years and has not had any close calls with deer thus far.

He believes them to work and just wishes they made something to work for dumb blondes on cell phones in cars.

The old wolf whistle still works pretty good on blondes to get their attention, but they will still probably run over ya.

OK,
To clarify, are we talking the old wind powered ones that work at 30+mph or the fancy new electronic ones that are "on" no matter how fast you are going?

My friend has the ones that are the "old wind type".

I had a set of the wind type on a pickup I had some years ago and all I can say is the only deer I saw while driving at night just looked up and watched me drive by.  Don't know anything about the powered type.

I don't know what the deer are supposed to do when they hear them so I don't know if mine were working or not.  I had heard they were pretty much a joke.
