Title: Axle Removal question...
Post by: Damn Yankee on April 28, 2007, 02:03:31 PM
Trying to take the front wheel off for a tire change (@#*!! nail), made it past the axle bolt and pinch bolts..
But how does one slide the axle out? The right side is threaded for the sake of the axle bolt and the concern is I might ruin it if I try to punch it out with a hammer....I looked through previous threads for ideas, but came up empty....suggestions?

We tapped mine out last weekend, didn't take much effort though.

Tap it out with a dead blow hammer and a socket extension.  You won't hurt anything.  Try wiggling the wheel as you pull it out to see if that helps.

I've had good luck turning the axle bolt while pulling on it..

After posting, I went back out to the garage and stared at the left side of the axle and the two holes...and finally figured "hey...I could stick a longstem screwdriver through there and yank it out THAT way!"

Sure enough. Shoulda thought a little harder about it before posting, but that's a rookie shade tree mechanic for ya. (Though I did take off the brake caliper first as suggested in the tip and tricks section, very helpful.)Thanks for your suggestions.
