Title: V45 Question
Post by: Greg Cothern on May 08, 2007, 04:07:01 PM
Posting a question received via email.

Hello there, I just came across your website and was looking for how to change the oil on the 1984 v45 (vf700), I was hoping you had some pictures or at least what quantity and type of oil to use, any information is appreciated.

Thanks

The capacity is 3.1 US quarts for oil and filter change. The manual says 3..2 US quarts if overhauled. Or if you prefer, 2.9 liters and 3 liters respectively. Look for a sevice rating of SE or SF. Manual has three different viscosities to choose from, well 4 actually. 20W-40 and 20W-50 for temp range from about 15 F to over 100. 10W-40 for temps below zero to over 100F and 10 W 30 for temps about 0 to 90F. I think there is a pretty good thred on hear about oil too if you can find it. Hope that helps.

If you change the oil and filter the manual says 3.2 quarts.  I use Rotella T synthetic 5W- 40 or Rottella T non synthetic 20W-50. They both seem to work well non synthetic is less expensive  oil filters that will work Fram 6010A, Purolator PL 14459,Mobil 1m1-104, or Walmart brand ST6607, I go with the purolator but they say that the Walmart brand is just as good. There are two drain plugs the oil pan drain plug and the front cylinder head drain plug. Pictures aren't that great but hopefully you can tell where they are.

I just used the Honda GN4 10W-40 and the Fram listed above when I put her back together last month.  Thinking about switching to a synthetic next change.  Suggestions would be welcome

You probably want to stay away from Fram oil filters. They're constructed very poorly. For around $5 or $6, you can buy a very high quality Bosch. If you want to know the model number, let me know and I'll look it up for you.
