Title: Oil leak
Post by: HardDriveUSA on May 29, 2007, 06:49:39 PM
ouch.  This might be a new one on yall.  :(   I have noticed oil on my top right pipe for a few months now.  I finally took it in to have the oil changed and to see if they could figure out where the oil was comming from.  Seems like when my friend took that bike down, it cracked the cover, small crack, looks like a scratch more than a crack.  Two options I have so far:

1. Replace the cover with a new one.  That's around $400

Since this is NOT a Honda stealership as I have seen them called... and I actually trust this place Scooterpetes.com

2. Take the cover off, along with changing the air in the tires ;) ,  clean it up good and put a patch over it.  With 3 hours labor and $5 shop parts, that's closer to $200.

Anyone have any better/different options?  No I'm NOT going to sell it cheap to first offer, shame on you for even thinking it.

Didn't somebody on this boad just wreck a third gen Magna?  If not this board, then the delphi boad...........either way, there are wrecked bikes out there with good covers.

You let someone ride your bike?  I hope they had plenty of experience. Some people I know would be asking you what else do you share in your household.

That's who I bought the bike from. $2500 couldn't help it.  It had been sitting in his garage for 2 years unused.  Some reason his gal didn't like him on it after he took it down     The oil leak is just now starting to show itself.  Not sure if its cause I'm starting to enjoy and getting the rev's up a bit.  I do try to keep it under 10 k though.
Sorry, should have made that a bit clearer

The Magna is prone to a airbox leak since that is where the crankcase vents too..
You have any PICs of the crack and such for a visual???

I might need to set up photo session for my bike.  What's the best way to post to the board once I do get some photos?

Now to explain what you are looking at.  In the first pic, above the out of focus bolt is the crack that is leaking oil.  Do you know how hard it was to get that pic??  sheesh.  That is almost beside the brake pedal.  The next pic is where the oil is messing up my nice shiney bike   not sure why I uploaded the 3rd one.  4th is where the mufflers got scratched when the bike went down.  5th is mystery gunk on my left side I can't get off.  I am looking at vance and hines replacements in the future.

Try some black Permatex adhesive silicone on the inside of the cover. That will stop the leak until you can get another cover or have it welded.

For now I am going to keep my eye on the oil level, it's not leaking bad at all.  They caught me off guard when they showed me where it was leaking from.  I will check ebay and see what is there.
