Title: Think I should get my carbs done?
Post by: seratt on June 04, 2007, 05:27:25 PM
Sorry, I did a search and still am not sure what to do here.

I'm pretty sure my carbs need a good cleaning, or something.  The bike has 26k miles right now, and the guy I bought her from put 1k miles on her in 3 years.  He didn't mention, nor do I think he would really know, when the carbs were last done.

Right now I'm about half way through a can of sea foam.  Cold starts aren't a problem.  She doesn't liked to be choked for more then say 5 to 10 secs or so, then I have to just kill the choke and give her a hair of throttle for a couple of secs.  She runs np from then on.  If I simply leave the choke on instead, she dies.

The thing is, at highway speeds (around 5k rpm) the vibration seems a tad much.  (This is my first bike, so this vibration may be completely normal)  And also, when accelerating from a stand still, I can feel the bike bog down just a tad at times.  (This is hardly noticeable, but it's there.  I'd say around 2k rpm or so)  What kind of price should I look for for carb work?  If it's needed that is.

The guy who I bought her from say she has Vance & Hines installed.  Although, I'm pretty sure these aren't V&H exhaust.  Pretty sure it's cobra or Jardines.  Could I possibly need something else they forgot to do when installing the exhaust?

Some better pics of exhaust.

Thanks, and sorry for the long post.

1,000 miles + 3 years = carb rebuild (usually)

Well they should not really call it a carb rebuild since all that really happens is a good cleaning what you most likely need to do is run the rest of the seafoam thru her and  then if you have not done so yet change the plugs. I bet you are just fine she sounds strong to me she runs just like my two...
Very nice looking bike I might add congrats

There are several of us in MOOT that are willing and capable of helping you clean the carbs if you want...
All I have ever asked in return was to help turn a wrench with me.

Those are definitely not V&H pipes. I just installed a set and the exhaust opening is much different and they are stamped Vance and Hines on the top header pipe cover.

Might need a rejet and shimming if the PO did not do them when he changed the pipes? I'm no 3rd gen expert so just a guess.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Allen, that would be awesome.  Just let me know when you'd like to.  My sister lives in the Woodlands, so I could stay with her (work permitting).

Is there a kit I should buy to redo the carbs?

Oh yea, I was planning on replacing the plugs this week or weekend.  I'm pretty sure I can do that myself np.

I know nothing about motors or motorcycles.  I bought a book recently called Motorcycle Maintenance by Zimmerman.  Seems good so far, and it's explaining just how everything works to me in a really simplified manner.

This, http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Guide-Motorcycle-Maintenance/dp/1884313418

But I bought it at Barnes & Nobles.

Well MOOTMag is just around the corner and I get off the boat the day before.. If you could make MOOTMag shoot Greg and I could fix them up there hehehe . There is nothing you need unless the Last owner put the pipes on and did nothing in that case we could do the DD jets and shims but we don't know whats in there so they may have been done before but we will find that out when we take them apart and clean them..
I would suggest the service manual it is downloadable on this site somewhere as a PDF that will cover your bike for every repair you do.
When you come over I will explain anything you like so make a list
The plugs may make a difference let me know..  If you have any questions feel free to ask anything we have a bunch of great people in this group and there is nothing I have seen yet that we could not solve....

I just got a new job, so I won't be making MOOTMag. =/  But maybe we could plan on sometime after MOOTMag then?

Maybe by then a wrench session wouldn't be far around the corner.

Well, I know I have a small leak in my shaft seal.  It began leaking, hardly noticeable leak, after I changed my oil last.  It quit though since.  I'm guessing it gunked itself up maybe.

And I need to replace my speedo cable.  When changing the tire it came right out at the wheel.  So, every so often when I hit a hard bump my speedo will stop working until I hit another bump.  haha.  Pretty rare though.

I think I can do both of these repairs myself though.  The shaft seal, I'm assuming I'll have to drain the oil before making that repair?

Well that would be the best time to do it yes as far as the speedo there should be a screw holding the cable housing in the part that attachs to the wheel this is a commen part to break on my Yellow bike I have been nursing mine it is not all the way broke LoL
