Title: rear shock absorbers
Post by: timtim on June 21, 2007, 04:24:36 PM
I have a '96 with 60,000 miles. Should I be replacing rear shocks soon?Anyone know the replacement interval for these stock shocks?

Pfftt...I got him beat.  76,000+ on my '96

Back on topic, the interval is not listed but after that many miles they most likely will be getting weak.  You can usually nab a used set on eBay for cheap or if you want find a good used set of VTX1300 shocks for better looks and a firmer ride.

Thanks guys for the responses.I've been off-line since June.Still averaging over 45MPG for my work commute.I'll try Ebay for VTX shocks for a firmer ride.Since i'm not getting any lighter.

I replaced the stock one with the Honda Shadow 1100 Ace shocks and worked great since the diference in weight betwen the 2 bikes is not to big. VTX are a little harder since is a heavyer motorcycle.

Just my 0.02 cents

On the VTX shocks are the specs the same, will it keep the Magna the same height... ie: height, travel, bolt-on etc. the same?

I am putting in progessive in the front for the dive issue (not sure if it will help much or if I will still need to put in spacers) but the rear progresssives are high dollars! I think I would like the back a little stiffer. How much stiffer are the VTX's? Are they stiff at the weakest setting?

That is a great find for less dollars! Shed some light on the 1100 also or are they about the same as the Magna?

The VTX 1800 shocks are close enough to the same, while the 1300 shocks are a bit shorter (0.5" I think).

I installed a used set of 1800s a couple months ago, and am about to go back to stock.  The 1800s are just too stiff for 1-up riding for my tastes.  I didn't want to lose any ride hight, so I never tried the 1300s.

I haven't even gotten 'em off yet, hold your water son ;-)

I'm going to try and find some 1300s first (yes, I see what I said a couple hours ago), after that I'll probably ask $50 plus some amount for shipping unless a pick-up can be arranged.  But, "must find 1300s first...."

Greg, you still interested in a set of VTX 1800 shocks (see above)?
