Hey guys. Steve from Boston here. Having a really bad day! Just got home from the stealership with my new K & N air filter for my 86 V65. Got it all set to install, took off the seat, side covers and unbolted the tank. raised the tank and propped it up on it's stand, pulled the old filter out and my fuel line cracked open  ! Spilling gas out everywhere. The crack is just behind the clamp. my question for you guys is:
Is there enough play in the line to cut it and re clamp it back on or do i need a new fuel line? If I need a new fuel line:
1) Should I get an OEM line? or
2) Is there a better line(hopefully less money) I should look for?
Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated!
If its just the standard black flexable rubber line from the tank to the carbs, Then I would just replace it with standard fuel line you can get from Autozone or similar. It shouldnt be anything special. Just make sure its fuel rated, close to the same Inside Diameter. Make sure its not wiper hose.
No it's the larger red hose...
On my 83 V65 the fuel line is the same as any automotive fuel line. Just take a small piece with you so you get the right diameter (or take the new fuel filter).
If the line broke that easy I would definitely change the line out even if there is enough slack. You want to have some slack so you can change the fuel filter without too much trouble.
Check the rest of your fuel lines. If one is that brittle, it is very likely that they all are.
Good luck.
IF you have enough length you could cut it and reattach, just remember its shorter when you lift tank up next time.
Also keep in mind that it was aged enough to split this time so I would probably replace it. You can go with OEM or you can find the fuel line at your local automotive parts store. Measure and get appropriate size.
The red fuel line does not have much extra to it. If it is too long it will pinch when the tank is lowered. I would replace it with an OEM part since it is molded to fit the angle just right.
powersportspro.com has it for $34
discounthondaparts.com has it for $24
Good luck. Be careful when reinstalling the line. I had mine twisted a little bit and when I lowered the tank it restricted the flow enough to starve the bike of fuel after the secondary tank ran out.
Good luck.
