Title: Too Much Heat From The Engine!
Post by: mkgarvin on July 17, 2007, 07:59:19 PM
I'm having a problem.  Now I know it's hot in Texas.  But give me a break.  The heat blowing on me from the engine is extreme.  I was convinced I just needed to take my windshield off to ride during the summer.  No such luck.  The heat just shifted down about 12 inches to blow at my waist instead of my chest.  I put Vance and Hines pipes on it in January 2006 and Greg Cothern rejetted it for me.  The only thing I have not done is have the valves adjusted.  Some say the airflow around the engine is not directed properly.  Others say it's the fact I have four pipes instead of two.  Bottom line is I'm ready to sell or put it up until cooler weather.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Tis the nature of the beast I ride mine everyday in Houston it is plain HOT as long as I am moving I am fine but traffic sucks when it grinds to a halt !!! The Magna will handle the heat no problem it,s just the owners that hate the heat LoL

I don't have any experience with cruisers for a daily rider other then the Magna.  I would think sitting still on all bikes would get hot.  I know sitting in traffic I dread when the fan starts because as we all know the hot air does not rise fast enough and we get a good blast of hot air.  The newer bikes have bigger radiator but they have got to be hot also.

Sorry Mary, like the others said I'm afraid it's just the nature of the beast.  I bought my Magna in part because I thought it would be cooler than my big ol' Valk.  Not much difference that I can tell.

You're lucky it's been a relatively cool summer so far.  There have been some long, hot ones since I started riding again in '02.  I guess I just love riding more than I hate the heat.

My biggest question:  Where is all that engine heat in the winter when I'm freezing????        :?:  :?:

There was a talented gentleman in Carrollton about ayear back that manufactured a heat deflector for the 3rd gen Magna that kept the air on the engine but then when it exited heated it did not heat the rider up. I will lok on the web site and see if he still has any pictures or posting. Not a bad design as I remember.

I would like to see that heat deflector. My legs where starting to hurt by the end of the 4 th of July parade in 2006.

While the tank is off being painted I am going to explore an idea of getting more cool air to the intake filter.

Many people have tryed and failed as far as the filter goes start messing with the airbox and you open a whole can of worms hehehehe...   Now if I had Dyno so I could play with the numbers and see what I was doing on paper Maybe just maybe!!!

I learned the hard way that when it gets hot (read: 100+) even going fast doesn't really help.  At that temp it is like standing in front of one of those jet looking heaters.

I was not going to mess with the air box, just see if there was anything to do to get cooler air to that area.  Sitting on top of the engine it has got to be hot under the tank.

It's just the same over here in Phoenix.  I've been out of town for almost a month, and itching to ride (just got back today).  I'm not going to let 110 stop me!!  You just have to stop worrying about how you smell    I've been thinkign about bringing along a small spray bottle and keeping it handy while riding.

It could be worse; the bike I just sold (05 Kawi Concours) not only roasted you with its full fairing and poor air flow design but also after sitting in traffic for any longer than 10 seconds the overly rich jetting left you smelling like you were chain -sawing all day; not cool when you work in a professional office environment...

Mary save your $$$ on the valve adjustment/check, I have been around MANY MANY Magna's and only have seen 2 EVER that needed an adjustment.
They are adjusted by changing the shim thickness, they just dont change..

As for the heat issue, as stated, any motorcycle in Texas is going to be hot!

Thanks Guys.  I'll quit my whining now.  But I would be interested to talk to the guy that knows about heat deflectors.  I appreciate everyone's comments.

If it makes you feel any better check out the BMW "air heads".  ie the 1980 BMW R65.  Those WILL keep you warmed up.  Trust me.

I have very little traffic sitting, but if I did I might consider looking into one of those air-conditioning devises that sit on your shoulders.  I have seen them on TV but never in person.

I am going to get a camelback that would more then do the trick for me.

I've got highway pegs on my crash bar, I find kicking my legs out on them helps alot...and just keep moving :)

I need to read the signatures, I thought when the guys were calling you Mary, it was directed to a guy being a wimp

I saw a cloth, that when wet, stays cool. Saw it the VJMC days and it was much cooler than the ambient temperature. Not much help, because I don't know the name of it nor the price.

Thomas, that is probably some of the new phase change crystals inside the cloth.  Pretty pricey........if not, it's the cheap imitation stuff that just uses simple evaporation instead of phase change technology.  I'm not sure who sells the stuff, but if you do a search for "phase change cooling" I bet you'll find some.

Curtis,

Just as you said, I did a search for phase change cooling and came to this site. I haven't read it yet, just saw that they have both the phase change and the evaporative cooling items.

Thanks.
