Went out for a few quick miles in this hot/humid weather. I had to warm the bike up after feeding it a few quarts of fresh Silkolene. As I had suspected in another thread, I have a serious trans problem. I think 2nd gear or parts associated with 2nd gear are pretty much trashed. When rolling on the power in 2nd bad grinding noises can be heard. A quick click into third as all is well. I'm really bummed. Anybody know whats involved in overhauling a trans? How much it would cost or even a wrench who would be willing to do it? I've rebuilt a few dirt bike motors but I don't want to get into the magna motor.
:(
I don't know much about trans but that sounds serious. the magna has enough power to skip second gear but if there are broken parts from second gear it may eventually start ruining the remaining gears. (Yes?, No?)
Maybe you can find a working trans for cheap on ebay so you can replace the whole component instead of trying to open it up and repair it.
If you have a professional uninstall it then a trans shop repair it then a professional reinstall it it would seem to me many $100's. Might be cheaper to buy a used working one then sell your for parts.
Got my eye on a trans on fleabay. Not matter how you slice it, the repair is going to be expensive. If I can't score the parts to fix I'll most likely just part the bike.
I have one still in the engine and maybe one on the shelf. I'll look tomorrow and let you know.
I didn't get home in time from work tonight to bid on the one I found on ebay. It's like a bummer dude. 8)
Looks like the only one I have is still in the engine. If you want to disassemble it let me know. Don't know the history of the bike either so it's a 50/50 chance it will work.
If I can't locate one already removed I'll check back with you.
Thanks,

Use a sniper program. Auction Sentry is what I use. No more hanging on the 'puter til the last few secs or missing a needed item cause you're gone.
Have you looked for a complete engine with a known good tranny? Tranny swapping is a bitch on the 1st Gen, I don't imagine it is any easier on the 3rd Gen. Engine swap would be much easier.
A whole engine swap would certainly be easier. My engine is in very good cosmetic condition and runs like a top. It's kinda hard to let that go.
On a side note. Does anybody know if the motor from the V65 Sabre is a direct swap? If not the whole motor, how about the internals?
Dont take my word for it but should be... around 1990 i had a magna and buddy had a sabre.... looked exactly the same on setup ... think the only difference was the sabre was a lil lighter.... he always outran me on top end anyway.
IIRC the Sabre engine will work since it has additional bolt holes for mounting the engine to the frame but a Magna engine won't fit a Sabre.
The more I look into fixing my Magna the more I'm getting discouraged. I'm not sure if I want to spend the time and the money. Finding a mechanic in my area is proving to be difficult. A buddy of mine who has a shop won't touch it and doesn't know of anybody that will. That just leaves it to me. I know I could do it but the last motorcycle motor I rebuilt blew up shortly after completion. Not my fault though. The engine case came apart.
The V65 Magna/Sabre engines are driveshaft whereas your 3 Gen is chain drive. It definitely will not swap without some serious modification. You would have a bad ass bike if it could be done.

All the way up in PA but maybe you know someone up there? You can part out your old engine (tranny, starter, carbs, etc) and make back a good chunk of the money spent. Hate to see a perfectly good bike parted over a 2nd gear issue. I do understand it is a big issue for a non mechanic though. Splitting cases is not for the feint of heart. :)
I thought Brandon was working on his 83 V-65? Or am I lost?
Your not lost. Mine is indeed a 1983 model. I was wondering if parts from the same vintage Honda Sabre could be used.
I'm not lost, just a part time idiot. I have this ingrained idea that MOOT is a 3rd Gen site and can't seem to shake it. Yeah, a Sabre engine will swap in. Only problem I am aware of is an extra motor mount that hangs out there. Dude named Rocksalt over on the v4hondabbs has a Sabre engine in his Magna.
