Title: Coolant Leak
Post by: fuji on August 02, 2007, 01:04:50 PM
Looks like there is a slow leak from the coolant hose going to the cylinders.  Would replacing the hose stop this leak?  If so, how is that hoes replaced, it looks like it is actually coming out of the engine.

You have dry rotted o-rings. This is a common problem on the 1st Gens. 25 yrs is a long time to ask for an o-ring to last. If you have a local seal supply warehouse hit them up for 4 each 13mm x 2.5mm
nitrile o-rings. Pull the tubes gently, clean out the corrosion, lube the new seals with a drop of light oil or silicone based grease and reinstall. Easiest done with the carbs removed but...

Billy is correct.
However if you find yourself unable to get new ones right away, I was able to temporarily remedy this problem on another bike by removing the tube, cleaning it up, removing the oring and turning it "inside out". Not a lasting fix but it kept me riding for a couple months until winter hit and I could fix it correctly. I had much more time then money then....If you only want to do it once...do it Billys (the right) way.

Fugi,
Call me at 972-221-8902 and I'll get a set of o-rings in the mail to you. Promise to make a small donation to an animal welfare organization if you get the chance, and we'll be even.

Sweet thanks, its actually been a little too long since I donated to the human society.  When my wife and I adopt we always adopt a rescue because too many critters got a raw deal in this life.

By the way in the 13mm X 2.5 is the 13 the OD or the ID?

short hijack...I got my purebred Siberian Husky "Pheobe" from a rescue in Southern Illinois. A previous pal of mine was my Alaskan Malamute "Samantha" from another shelter. I love helping them and they help me sooo much.
