does anyone know ? will i have to adjust the fuel air mixture after installing the shims i will not be installing the jets and i am running stock pipes and air filter. if i need to adjust them could you recommend a setting. and has anyone installed the shims without removing carbs from bike. alot of questions i know but dont want to screw anything up.
You can install the shims with the carbs on the bike if your not also installing jets.
You will need a shorty #2 Phillips screwdriver and a good firm grip, paitence, and take the radiator loose. NOT off but loose so you can reach up to the front.
Doing the shims on the bike is a bit more difficult but we have done it a few times. For the pilot jet screws I would suggest adjusting no matter what, I believe it to be one of the most effective adjustments one can make on the Magna carbs. For a completely stock bike, I have had good luck at 2 3/4 turns out from a light bottom seat. This adjustment is also much more difficult on the bike unless you have little hands. You need to accurately count the turns when making the adjustment. I would make a notch on the bottom of the DRP tool so you can feel the turns.
woosh glad i read this cause i dont have a Drp tool lol do you have a picture of one or know where i can look on the web or wher i could buy one
Of course you can get the DRP from Dave Dodge, or you can go to Mac Tools. D-shaped Bit for 90° Carb Tool, 08-0242.
I'm trying to visualize this,,, from a rather weak memory,,, but won't it be just as easy (assuming that you are not going to remove the carb bank itself) to remove the seat, tank, side covers, filter box top and bottom, and the top plate around the air horns. At this point you have access to the carb vacuum chambers from the side and top of the V.
There's still a fair amount of dis/re-assembly, but you won't need to pop the carb bank, and get it back on, which is the most difficult task in some cases. On my 02 the pop off and pop on were ralatively easy, but I did quite a bit of research on methods first.

ibdwight I live in Arlington I have one of those tools and you are more than welcome to borrow it. Depending on when you add the shims I have done one and have watched one being done, I am no expert but am willing to give you hand doing it. I do beleive that it would be easier to take the carbs off to do it.
