Title: V65 Rear End Noise?
Post by: taz on August 22, 2005, 11:22:15 AM
I have a 1986 V65 Magna.  I have been hearing a noise from the rear of the bike when I let off the gas and begin to stop.  The noise sounds like a brake pad that is rubbing if the rotor were warped.  But, the noise doesn't stop when the back brake is applied.  Can anyone help me diagnose this?  I can hear it when a lot better when I lean my head to the left side, not that it necessarily is coming from the left side.  The noise is not constant, it stops for a period of time and then will start again.  I just want to assure myself that it will not lock up on me when on a trip or something.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

I get the feeling you are thinking it possibly could be coming from the differential?
I would just pull it, drain, inspect and know for sure that things look good and has fresh fluid.
That will rule out the diff, on the brake side well could have some debris between the caliper, pad, and or disc.  Small rocks find the strangest places to hide, LoL.
I am curious as to what you find.

Greg, I am not sure where the noise is coming from.  It is very sporatic.  It wasn't making it last night on the way home from work.  Last year before the Ruidoso, NM rally I changed the rear differential oil like I do about once a year.  Well, I got a wild hair and decided to use a torque wrench on the plug like the manual says.  I didn't know it but the torque wrench was broken.  I ended up pulling the threads out of the rear end.  Jim Dailey and I put a helicoil in it and sealed the plug.  I can still change it be sucking it out the check plug.  I just am not sure where it is coming from, I just want to put my mind at ease.
