Title: Source for 17t sprocket?
Post by: chel_in_il on September 18, 2007, 12:27:53 PM
My 24k '94 needs a new chain, so I thought I'd swap out the sprockets and make a change. The Magna is plenty powerful as it is, and I'd like to increase the front sprocket size to 17t. I read of people doing it, but can't find a source for the sprocket. I called MAWonline, nope... RK.. nope.. (guy thought I was crazy too, but he prolly rides a Gsxr.)

I know it exists, but from who?

Ordered front sprocket 17t from Sprocket Specialists for $37.99 (steel)

Ordered rear 40t steel from MAWonline - JT Sprockets, $32.95
Chain 120 link - RK GP230XSOZ1 - $95.95 (it's a new item this year)

May be useful information to anyone in the future. :)

I'm curious.. who here has changed out their front sprocket to a 17? If so, what do you think?

I just changed from 17 back to 16. I didn't know it had a 17 on it when I got it. I got about 45 to 48 mpg which is not that much better than  what others have been getting . However there is a big difference in takeoffs on steep inclines or especially riding two up. As I posted on the other thread I won't be going back to a 17. Just my two cents.

Charles would you say it's like taking off in second gear with your new configuration?

You probably shortened the life of the clutch also with the slow starts.
Title: sprockets

I've ridden my 2000 for 6 years now, with new OEM sprockets last year, and would not change a thing. The bike was designed with the factory sprockets to get the best performance possible, and i'm very comfortable with the mileage I get, although I've never really checked it for MPG.

I can go riding all day for between $20 - $30 in fuel, (in Canada, where gas is EXPENSIVE) and that includes a full tank returning home. My mileage actually sucks, when you get right down to it, but it's a FUN machine, and what I pay out for fuel is actually more than returned to me in pleasure. Toys for big boys are not cheap!

Spendind a dime to save a penny? Not me!

Cheers!
